MIAMI HERALD TELLS STORY OF YOUNG HEART TRANSPLANT RECIPIENT AT JACKSON

A recent article in the Miami Herald chronicled the story of Danielle Rodriguez, a 22-month old who suffered from cardiomyopathyóa heart disease that caused her to suffer from malnourishment and pressure on her lungs. Last week, Danielle received a heart transplant at Jackson Memorial Hospital and her health is improving rapidly, well enough to return home as soon as next week. She has spent the past 10 months at Jackson. The Herald article highlights the work of Eliot Rosenkranz, M.D., associate professor and chief of the section of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery within the UM Department of Surgery, who headed the transplant team. UNITED WAY 2000 IS HERE! HOW ARE YOU CHIPPING IN?

As the number one per capita donor among U.S. private universities, each year the University of Miami is a very active participant in the campaign to raise funds for the United Way. Beyond the statistics, many departments in the School of Medicine do more than their share of giving by holding bake sales, car washes, and much more. The October issue of Medical Center Update, your campus newsletter, will ask "What special contribution does your department make to the University's United Way campaign?" If you've got an answer, reply to update@med.miami.edu. You also can offer your own suggestions. Make your voice heard, and remember, "Good things happen when you give."
