DEADLINE APPROACHES FOR TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER'S GAP-FUND PROGRAM

The Office of Technology Transfer reminds faculty that the September 30 application deadline for the Gap-Fund Program is rapidly approaching. This award supports early-stage research with commercial potential. Three grants of $20,000 each will be awarded, and one must come from either the Coral Gables or Rosenstiel campuses. All Invention Disclosures submitted between December 1, 1998, and September 30, 2000, are eligible. Interested parties must submit an Invention Disclosure (unless they have already done so) together with a "Gap-Fund Award Program Application" to the Office of Technology Transfer, Dominion Tower, Suite 906 (M-811). DR. PRISCILLA POTTER CONTRIBUTES TO HERALD ARTICLE ON MIGRAINE HEADACHES

The Miami Herald addressed pain and treatment of migraine headaches in an article last week and cited Priscilla Potter, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and assistant dean of curriculum, as an expert on the topic. Dr. Potter specializes in treatment of headaches and migraines and discussed drugs used for treatment in the article, entitled "Hope for Migraines." In addition, the story included details about the source of migraines and focused on Dr. Potter's patient, Province Park, who has been taking aspirin and magnesium pills to avoid the painful headaches. HUMAN GENOME PROJECT AND DR. SEUSS COME TOGETHER IN HERALD OPINION ARTICLE BY DR. GWEN WURM

Children's author Dr. Seuss serves as inspiration for one pediatrician at the medical center, with regards to the ethics of genetics research and its impact on the future of medicine. Gwen Wurm, M.D., assistant professor and director of community pediatrics in the Department of Pediatrics, cited the children's book Horton Hears a Who as an analogy to the current issues of genetics in a Miami Herald article entitled "Discovering 'Language of God' in Dr. Seuss's Stories." In the Seuss story, an elephant discovers an entire civilization on a speck of dust, much like the volumes of genetic information carried on each strand of human DNA.
