FACULTY TOWN MEETING
Dean John G. Clarkson, M.D., has scheduled a special Medical Faculty Town Meeting
for 5:30 p.m. tomorrow. Provost Luis Glaser, Senior Vice President David
Lieberman, and Vice President and Treasurer Diane Cook will discuss staff
retirement funding issues. Budget issues for 2005 will be discussed
by Dr. Clarkson; John Deeley, vice president for administration, operations
and planning; Tom Fitzpatrick, associate vice president for financial affairs;
Minor Anderson, managing director of UMMG; and Jorge Guerra, M.D., chairman
of the UMMG governing board. The meeting will be held in the Retter Auditorium
on the second floor of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. All faculty
members are encouraged to attend.
NEW PROTOCOL SUBMISSION FORMS FOR
HUMAN SUBJECTS RESEARCH
The Human Subjects Research Office has revised all forms for the submission
of protocols to the University’s Institutional Review Boards. These new
forms go into effect on February 1. Please visit our website at http://www.miami.edu/hsro for
a preview of these forms in Adobe PDF format. Writable versions in Microsoft
Word will be available from our website on the effective date. For more information

GENE MICROARRAY IN CANCER SEMINAR
The DNA Microarray Facility is hosting a seminar and discussion with Phillip
Douglass, Ph.D., of Agilent Technologies entitled "Microarray Applications
in Cancer Research: Laser Capture Microdissection and Whole Genome Analysis." Dr.
Douglass will speak tomorrow at noon in the RMSB fourth-floor auditorium,
followed by a question and answer session, and lunch will be provided. If

SPINAL CORD INJURY CONFERENCE TODAY
The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine in conjunction with the South Florida
Spinal Cord Injury Model System, The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, Jackson
Memorial Medical Center and the Miami VA Medical Center will present the
Third Annual Spinal Cord Injury Conference today in the seventh-floor auditorium,
Lois Pope LIFE Center. Consumers, students and health care providers are
invited to the conference, which runs from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Topics will
include an update on progress training the spinal cord, translational research,
new findings related to exercise and SCI, treating complications of spinal
cord injury, recent research highlights, ongoing clinical trials and more.

RESEARCH ETHICS IN LATIN AMERICA
Fernando Lolas, M.D., of the Pan American Health Organization in Santiago,
Chile, will speak on “Research Ethics in Latin America: 10 Years of
PAHO Activity,” this Friday at noon in the Microbiology Conference
Room, RMSB 3109. Lunch will be provided and it is not necessary to RSVP. “Dialogues
in Research Ethics," sponsored by UM's Ethics Programs, is a monthly
series designed to stimulate discussion and debate. For more information

WEIGHT WATCHERS SESSION BEGINS AGAIN
The next 13-week session of this established weight loss program starts January
27. Participants will meet for an hour every Tuesday at noon in ACC West,
room 128. The whole program costs $118 and includes weigh-ins, lessons in
how and what to eat, and plenty of moral support. Participants are also encouraged

DISCUSSION GROUP FOR UM PARENTS OF TEENS
S.T.E.P. (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting) is a parenting discussion
group that offers parents a realistic and practical approach to meeting the
challenges of raising teens today. Participants will learn how to understand
their teen’s behavior and methods to improve listening, talking and
discipline. The group will meet every Thursday for eight weeks, from January
29 through March 18, from 12:30 to 1:30 pm in Dominion Garage suite 155,

MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM
Are you feeling anxious or depressed or exhibiting troubling behaviors? The
Department of Psychiatry's Division of Complementary & Integrative Medicine
and University of Miami Behavioral Health are sponsoring group sessions to
address individual issues. The group, called Transitions, will meet every
Monday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for 10 weeks in Dominion Tower Room 412, and will
be facilitated by Janet Konefal, Ph.D., M.P.H., C.A. Sessions are free to
all University employees. Dr. Konefal will be incorporating the newest technology
of change, Meta-Energetics, which has been dubbed the 'future of psychotherapy.'

MEDICAL PURCHASING EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE PRESENTATION
The University of Miami entered into a partnership with Fisher Consulting Services
in 2001 for the Asset Managed Maintenance Program which to date has saved
thousands of dollars on equipment maintenance and service for more than 70
departments. As a way of saying thanks, the Medical Purchasing Department,
in conjunction with Fisher Consulting Services, will hold an Asset Managed
Maintenance Program presentation and breakfast on January 26 at 9:30 a.m.
in the Mailman Center Auditorium. During this breakfast, departments that
currently participate in the Program will receive a certificate of appreciation
showing the amount of money the department has saved with the program this
year. If your department is not in the program, you are invited to attend
to learn how your department can save with the AMMP. For more information

HURRICANES HOOPS ACTION
The Miami Hurricane men’s basketball team continues its Big East conference
schedule at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow, hosting Rutgers at the Convocation Center.
Season tickets are still available for the 2004 Big East season and next season
in the ACC and individual tickets start at only $15. To purchase tickets, call

The week of January 25th is Hurricane Hoops Employee Appreciation Week! All
full-time employees can purchase $1 tickets to the women’s basketball
game Wednesday, January 28, against Notre Dame and the men’s basketball
game Saturday, January 31, against Georgetown. Each UM employee (with valid
ID) will receive one ticket free and can purchase up to five additional tickets
for $1 each. Employees will also receive food and merchandise discounts at
these games. Any employee who gets all 12 tickets (two free and 10 purchased)
will also get a free t-shirt while supplies last. Tickets are available between
11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the medical campus today, Thursday, and January 27 and
29, next to Au Bon Pain.

Madhav Dhodapkar, M.D., Head of the Laboratory of Tumor Immunology and Immunology
and assistant professor at The Rockefeller University in New York, will present “Tumor-Immune
Interactions: Patients with Monoclonal Gammopathies,” in the UM/Sylvester
conference room 1301 on February 13 from noon to 1 p.m. This didactic lecture
series provides a forum for outstanding clinical and translational researchers
to interact with UM/Sylvester faculty. The focus of the series is to bring
basic science and clinical researchers together to discuss recent advances

TEACHING CONFERENCE ON HEART & STROKE
Register now for the 36th Annual Teaching Conference in Clinical Cardiology
and Neurology, February 13 to 15 at the Hyatt Regency Miami. The conference
is a primary care update presented by the Center for Research in Medical
Education focusing on needs in managed care, especially bedside skills training.
UM physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurses can register for
a reduced fee of $100 ($150 for UM physicians), and CME credit and nurse

LEARN TO WRITE WINNING GRANTS
The Office of Research is sponsoring “Write Winning Grants” on
Thursday and Friday, March 4 and 5, at the JMH Diagnostic Treatment Center
room 259. Stephen W. Russell, founding and managing member of Grant Writers'
Seminars and Workshops, L.L.C., will conduct the sessions. Russell has received
grant support from the National Institutes of Health as a principal investigator
since the early 1970s including individual, group, center, and training grants.
Attendance at the seminar is limited and participants will be selected through
an application process. The cost to attend is $125 and payment by check, IDR,
