NIH LEADERS JOIN SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
FACULTY FOR MEDICAL CAMPUS SEMINAR

The School of Medicine plays host to a panel of experts from the National Institutes of Health for a special seminar next Monday, April 14. Don’t miss these national leaders offering their insight on a variety of topics, including the growth of technology in medicine, health care policy and legislation, resources from the National Library of Medicine, and research in aging. The University’s own Carl Eisdorfer, Ph.D., M.D., chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences; and Luis Glaser, Ph.D., executive vice president and provost, will be joined by Richard Hodes, M.D., director of the National Institute on Aging; Marc Smolonsky, associate director of the NIH Office of Legislative Policy and Analysis; Terry Yoo, Ph.D., computer scientist at the National Library of Medicine; Toni Yancey, outreach coordinator at the Southeast Atlantic Regional Library in Baltimore; and U.S. Congressman Mark Foley. The event will be held from 2 to 4:30 p.m., in Bascom Palmer Eye Institute’s Retter Auditorium.

UM PHYSICAL THERAPY GRADUATE
PROGRAM RANKED THIRD IN NATION

In its annual edition of “America’s Best Graduate Schools,” U.S. News & World Report recently named the graduate program in the Division of Physical Therapy number three in the nation. The program has been ranked among the top four in the country since 1995, the first year graduate physical therapy programs were included in the magazine’s listing, and is the youngest program in the magazine’s top 10.

HEALTH CARE HEROES LUNCHEON HONORS
DR. ROBERT SCHWARTZ AND DR. BERNARD ROOS

Support your community’s Health Care Heroes at the annual Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce luncheon honoring those who have made an extraordinary impact on health care in South Florida. Robert Schwartz, M.D., chairman of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, has been named a finalist for the award this year, in recognition of his efforts in establishing the Jefferson Reaves, Sr., Family Practice Center in Overtown, his encouragement of cultural competency in clinical practice, and a commitment to compassionate health care. Also named finalists for a 2003 Health Care Heroes Award are Bernard Roos, M.D., professor of geriatric medicine, who serves as chief academic officer of Miami’s Jewish Home and Hospital for the Aged; and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at UM/Jackson. Featuring UM President Donna E. Shalala as invited speaker, the luncheon will be held this Thursday, April 10, 11:30 a.m., at the JW Marriott Hotel, 1109 Brickell Avenue. ANNOUNCES NEW DIRECTOR

Steven Teitelbaum, formerly vice president of interactive media for Miami-based Netrox, has joined the School of Medicine as director of the Web Development Group. FINE-FREE DAY THIS FRIDAY
AT CALDER MEDICAL LIBRARY

In recognition of Medical Information Day, the Calder Medical Library has declared Friday, April 11, as a Fine-Free Day. All fines will be waived for materials returned to the library on this day. Declared by the Medical Library Association, Medical Information Day celebrates the value of medical libraries at their institutions and in the community.

FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR HISPANIC/
LATINO CANCER RESEARCH PROJECTS

The southeast office of Redes en Acción, located in the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control at UM/Sylvester, offers developmental awards to support new investigator research on cancer related issues facing Hispanics. These grants aim to support efforts that will lead to National Institutes of Health funding of new research grants. All projects must have the potential to do at least one of the following related to cancer control: increase use of services and participation in prevention and clinical trials among the Hispanic/Latino population; increase knowledge and create positive changes in attitudes; increase training opportunities for Hispanic researchers and community partners; and address one or more of the following cancer sites: breast, cervical, lung, colorectal or prostate. A 10-page draft proposal delineating specific aims, background and significance, preliminary studies, and research design and methods, and a one-page detailed budget must be submitted electronically by May 16 to Frank J. SMOKING CESSATION PROGRAM

Registrations are now being accepted for the next installment of BeSmokeFree, the University’s smoking cessation program. Incorporating smoking intervention methods tailored to the needs of each participant along with interactive classroom sessions, BeSmokeFree is free to all UM health care plan members. Acupuncture and hypnosis are available as alternative methods of breaking addiction, and other interventions include cardiovascular wellness, complimentary pharmacological treatments, and follow-up support.
