SCHOOL OF MEDICINE WELCOMES
NEW LEADER IN HUMAN RESOURCES

Paul Hudgins will join the University later this month as the new associate vice president for medical human resources. He will be the School of Medicine’s senior leader responsible for developing new workforce initiatives, streamlining and improving employment processes, and consolidating all offices and resources involved with managing faculty, professional employees, and staff. Faculty issues will continue under the purview of the senior associate dean for faculty affairs.

COMMIT TO QUIT
WITH BESMOKEFREE

Another session of the new BeSmokeFree program (formally referred to as “Kick the Habit”) will begin during the final weeks of August. BeSmokeFree offers interventions that compliment the program’s support group/classroom sessions, including pharmacological treatments, such as the nicotine patch, gum, and Zyban (free to UM health insurance plan members); a 12-week supervised cardiovascular fitness program (75 percent reimbursement for UM health insurance holders); and acupuncture treatments or hypnotherapy (100 percent reimbursement for UM insurance holders). Participants who are enrolled in the University’s health care plan receive full reimbursement of program fees upon completion. The cost is $84 for each participant, and all UM health care plan members will receive a $12 voucher for each classroom session they attend. DRI OFFERS WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM
FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES

The Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) presents “Miami Lite,” a new program designed to help participants with weight loss, nutrition, controlling portion sizes, diabetes education, weight management techniques, and exercise guidelines. This 12-week program is open to the public and will begin on July 31, 8 a.m., at the DRI, first floor. The Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the Dewitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery invites faculty and staff to an open house at its new dental office, located at 1051 NW 14th Street, Suite 150.  The open house will be held July 18, noon to 3 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

EAP SEMINAR OFFERS STRATEGIES
FOR ANGER MANAGEMENT

Learn to control anger and set a positive example for your children at the Employee Assistance Program seminar “Managing Anger within the Family.” This course, which will be held July 21, 12:30 to 2 p.m., at the Winn Dixie Hope Lodge, will help participants recognize angry feelings, identify anger management skills, learn effective discipline strategies, and improve relationships with significant others. HURRICANES HEAD NORTH
FOR CANESFEST 2003

The Miami Hurricanes will head to Broward and Palm Beach counties later this month for CanesFest 2003. This free event offers fans a chance to collect player autographs, participate in an interactive Kids’ Zone, see performances by the Sunsations and cheerleaders, buy Hurricanes merchandise, and participate in a silent auction. HUMAN SUBJECTS RESEARCH SEMINAR EXAMINES
USE OF PERSONNEL FROM OTHER INSTITUTIONS

The Human Subjects Research Seminar for July will feature Julia Beutler, human subjects administrator, who will answer the questions, “When are personnel from other institutions considered ‘engaged’ (involved) in a research study and are they covered by UM's assurance?” The lecture will be held on July 29, noon to 1 p.m., in the Mailman Center, Room 3023. FINANCIAL ADVISORS VISIT CAMPUS
FOR INDIVIDUAL CONSULTATIONS

Representatives from Fidelity Investments and TIAA-CREF will visit the medical campus at the end of this month to conduct individual financial counseling sessions. Fidelity will hold appointments on July 30, and TIAA-CREF will be on hand July 31. All meetings will be held at the Human Resources Benefits Office, 901 N.W. 17th St., Suite D.
