ANNIVERSARY ALBUM
Learn fun facts about your second home and its history every two weeks, as e-Update
presents the latest in a special series commemorating the School of Medicine’s
50th anniversary.
The dream of a medical school at
the University of Miami came one step closer to fruition when Bowman Foster
Ashe, UM’s first president, struck a deal with the Veterans Administration
on August 21, 1951. He persuaded the VA to permit the University to lease the
service and supply facility – commonly known as the servants’ quarters
– at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables as a temporary location for classes
at the School of Medicine. This building served as the school’s teaching
site until 1969.
Ashe and Florida State Senator R.
Bunn Gautier furthered the budding medical school’s collaboration with
the community when they appealed to Dade County for permission to use the facilities
at Jackson Memorial Hospital for instruction. In return, the School of Medicine’s
faculty physicians would care for the hospital’s indigent patients. To
meet one of the requirements for accreditation, the school also was authorized
to appoint the teaching and medical personnel of Jackson.
