MEDICAL EDUCATION GRAND ROUNDS AND WORKSHOP
Ronald Clark, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Cell Biology
and Anatomy, will be the guest speaker at Medical Education Grand Rounds
on Friday at noon in the fifth floor of the Rosenstiel Medical Science
Building. Lunch will be served. The title of Dr. Clark’s presentation
is “Proposal to Modify the Lecture System as a Learning Environment.” Dr.
Clark currently works with David Gordon, M.D., in the Center for Research
in Medical Education where, in conjunction with three neurologists from
other institutions and a team of educational research specialists, they
are producing interactive programs and journal articles for medical students
and physicians. He will be presenting a vision of the future learning environment,
inviting views for maintaining or modifying the current lecture system,
and discussing computer software applications most applicable to the learning

CONVERSATIONS ABOUT CANCER SERIES
There will be three presentations of the Conversations about Cancer with UM/Sylvester
Experts series at UM/Sylvester at Deerfield Beach this summer: On Friday,
Lynn G. Feun, M.D., professor of medicine and co-leader of the Melanoma and
Related Skin Cancers Site Disease Group, will be discussing “Melanoma:
Diagnosis and Treatment” from noon to 1 p.m. Caio Max S. Rocha-Lima,
M.D., associate professor of clinical medicine, will discuss “Lung
Cancer—Diagnosis and Treatment” on Monday, June 28, and Yili
Zhou, M.D., Ph.D., director of Jackson Memorial Hospital Outpatient Pain
Clinic and assistant professor of clinical anesthesiology, neurology, psychiatry
and behavioral sciences, will talk about “New Treatments for Lower
Back Pain” on Monday, July 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. The Deerfield Beach
facility is located at 1192 East Newport Center Drive, Suite 100. The Conversations

RADIOLOGY RESIDENTS' DAY SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
The Department of Radiology will present the Robert Shapiro, M.D., Residents'
Day 27th Annual Scientific Program on Saturday from 7 to 11 a.m. at the
Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables. The program will consist of both presentations
of residents’ research and an invited lecture by George Bisset, III,
M.D., vice chairman of radiology at Duke University. Dr. Bisset
will also be presenting case reviews along with lectures on Thursday and
Friday at 12:30 p.m. in the Radiology Conference Room - West Wing
279. All interested members of the University community are invited to

INTENSIVE GERIATRIC TRAINING CONFERENCE
The UM Miami Area Geriatric Education Center (MAGEC) and the Miami VA Medical
Center's Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) will
be hosting the Intensive Geriatric Training Conference Wednesday through
Friday at the Westin Fort Lauderdale hotel. The goal of this three-day
conference is to provide licensed healthcare professionals with training
in the delivery of efficient interdisciplinary team care in order to meet
the healthcare needs of older adults. Continuing education credits will
be available for selected medical disciplines. This event has been approved
for tuition remission for a limited number of full-time University of Miami

SOUTH FLORIDA SCI MODEL SYSTEM ROVING SYMPOSIUM
The South Florida SCI Model System will sponsor a Special Roving Symposium
featuring J. George Thomas, M.D. Dr. Thomas will discuss “Medications
in Spinal Cord Injury” on Monday, June 28, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the
SCI Day Room in the Miami VA Medical Center. Refreshments will be provided.

INTENSIVE GERIATRIC TRAINING: SOCIAL WORK MODULE
The Miami VA Medical Center's Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical
Center (GRECC), the Miami Area Geriatric Education Center (MAGEC), and
Barry University's School of Social Work will be hosting the Intensive
Geriatric Training: Social Work Module this Saturday at Barry University
in Miami Shores. The program offers social workers, marriage and family
therapists, and mental health counselors 10 different 4-hour modules in
understanding and meeting the needs of the older adult population. Registration
is $10 per session for UM/JMH/VA employees and participants may choose

HUMAN SUBJECTS RESEARCH SEMINAR
The Human Subjects Research Seminar for June will feature Daniel
Armstrong, Ph.D., professor and associate chair of pediatrics and director
of the Mailman Center, speaking on “Children’s Participation
in Clinical Research.” The seminar will be held on Tuesday, June
29 at the Mailman Center, room 3023, from noon to 1 p.m. Advance

HUMAN SUBJECT RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
The Skin Research Group, directed by Brian Berman, M.D., professor of dermatology
and medicine, is looking for individuals with keloids and pediatric subjects
with atopic dermatitis (atopic eczema). For more information, please call

The School of Medicine-Miami Heart Research Institute Cardiovascular
DNA Diagnostic Laboratory is recruiting both pediatric and adult individuals
and/or families with any of the following:

Lethal ventricular arrhythmias, especially in the
setting of a first myocardial infarction;

Sudden cardiac death;

Drug-induced ventricular arrhythmias or long QT syndrome;

Congenital long QT syndrome;

Hypertrophic or idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy;

Right ventricular dysplasia, or
-
Ventricular non-compaction syndrome.
Samples from patients will be used for research studies of genes that

COMING SOON: TRAVEL WEB SITE FOR FACULTY AND STAFF
Launching June 28, e-Canes Travel, a self-booking travel reservation tool,
will provide the most cost-effective way for you to plan your business
travel. e-Canes Travel reduces surf time by retrieving travel information
and fares from dozens of sources, such as Orbitz, Expedia, and AA.com,
and displays them in a single screen. This new service facilitates direct
billing to the UM Ghost Card, and includes 24-hour customer service travel

BESMOKEFREE PROGRAM STARTS UP AGAIN IN JULY
Another round of the UM BeSmokeFree program will begin next month. BeSmokeFree
offers faculty, staff and dependents, as well as students and non-university
affiliates, a number of different techniques designed to help kick the
cigarette habit. These options complement the program’s basic support
group/classroom sessions, which will include seven group sessions during
a six-week program. Each session will be led by a variety of health experts,
such as a health educator, respiratory therapist, exercise physiologist,
mental health therapist, and nutritionist. Participants in BeSmokeFree
who also are enrolled in the University’s health care plan will receive
full reimbursement of program fees upon completion of the program. The
cost is $84 for each participant, and all UM health care plan members will
receive a $12 voucher for each classroom session they attend. One-on-one
intake appointments will begin during the first week of July. For more

SURVIVAL SKILLS FOR SCIENTISTS
The Office of Graduate Studies and the Postdoctoral Programs Office will
host a Professional Skills and Ethics Workshop, otherwise known as “Survival
Skills for Scientists,” on July 19 and 20 at the Rosenstiel School
of Marine and Atmospheric Science. The one-credit, two-day workshop for
senior graduate students and postdoctoral fellows will explore how to take
charge of your career, 10 Habits of Highly Effective Scholars, the specifics
of writing a scientific paper, ethical case studies, and more. It will
take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days at the Science and Administration
Building on the Rosenstiel campus. Lunch will be provided. Seating is limited.
