PREPARING FOR FTAA SUMMIT
An international summit to discuss the proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas
will be held in downtown Miami next week, November 17-21. Thousands of people
are expected to participate in demonstrations, mostly on Thursday and Friday
of that week, and School of Medicine security officers are prepared to monitor
the situation and ensure the safety of employees and patients. Plan to avoid
downtown Miami during the conference, and be aware of any street closings
that might affect your route to work. Please have your employee ID badge
with you at all times, and be patient with security as officers meet additional
demands. Special e-Update messages will be sent out as warranted before and
during the event.
FLU SHOTS FREE TO EMPLOYEES
All School of Medicine employees are encouraged to get a free flu shot. The
shots will be administered in the UM/Sylvester conference room 1301 this
week, on Tuesday from 7 to 10 a.m. and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Thursday
from 2 to 4 p.m. Please bring your UM I.D. badge and if you have United Healthcare
insurance, please bring your membership card or I.D. number, which is usually
your Social Security number.
OPHTHALMIC RESEARCH LECTURE
The Department of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology presents “Matrix
Metalloproteinases in Epithelial Regeneration: Surprising New Roles and Novel
Gene Regulatory Mechanisms,” with Elizabeth Fini, Ph.D., scientific director,
Evelyn F. and William L. McKnight Vision Research Center, Bascom Palmer Eye
Institute. Join us this Thursday at noon in the Pharmacology conference room,

UM/SYLVESTER DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES
Please join us this Friday to hear Katherine Vallis, M.D., Ph.D., of the Ontario
Cancer Institute at the University of Toronto, discuss “Functional
Radiogenomics and the Prospect of Improving Radiation Therapy Outcomes” from
noon to 1 p.m. in the UM/Sylvester conference room 1301. This didactic lecture
series provides a forum for outstanding clinical and translational researchers
to interact with UM/Sylvester faculty. The focus of the series is to bring
basic science and clinical researchers together to discuss recent advances
in the understanding and treatment of human cancer. Lunch will be served.

LUNG CANCER LECTURE IN DEERFIELD BEACH
Luis Raez, M.D., F.A.C.P., and Afonso Ribeiro, M.D., will present “Lung
Cancer, Diagnosis and Treatment” at UM/Sylvester at Deerfield Beach,
from noon to 1:30 p.m. this Friday. The presentation is part of the “Conversations

ETHICS SEMINAR ON ASSISTED DYING
Faye Girsh, Ed.D., from End-of-Life Choices in Denver Colorado, will lead “Research
on Assisted Dying” this Friday at noon in the VA Medical Center, room
207. Lunch will be provided and it is not necessary to RSVP. “Dialogues
in Research Ethics” is a monthly series of discussions on ethics. For

UNITED WAY BOOK SALE
The Louis Calder Memorial Library is having a book sale from now through November
19, or until all books sell out. Books are priced from $1 to $5 with proceeds

BASKETBALL SEASON TICKETS HALF OFF FOR UM EMPLOYEES
Full-time UM employees can purchase Hurricane basketball season tickets for
as little as $88 per seat for men’s hoops and $38 per seat for women’s
hoops. See the ‘Canes play in their final year in the Big East, then
be first in line for season tickets for the inaugural ACC season next year.
Sales associates will be on the medical campus this Thursday and next Thursday

TONY DANZA LIVE ON LINCOLN 2003
The star of “Who’s the Boss?” and “Taxi” will
perform a song and dance show this Thursday at the historic Lincoln Theatre
in an important event to benefit cancer research at UM/Sylvester. Master of
ceremonies will be actress Mindy Sterling, best known for her characterization
of “Frau Farbissina” in the Austin Powers movies. The performance
begins at 8 p.m. with a pre-show VIP party at 6:30 p.m. Tickets begin at $200.

REHABILITATION GRAND ROUNDS
The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine presents ““Rehabilitation
of Patients with Altered Levels of Consciousness,” designed to help health
care professionals differentiate among patients with low levels of consciousness
and carry out an appropriate evaluation of impairments and disabilities, delineate
the rehabilitation goals and propose a reasonable plan of care, and discuss
pitfalls inherent to the rehabilitation of patients with low levels of consciousness
and potential areas of research. This will take place next Thursday, November
20, 2003 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Lois Pope LIFE Center seventh-floor
auditorium. No RSVP necessary.

PROSTATE CANCER SCREENING
The Drive against Prostate Cancer, part of the National Prostate Cancer Coalition,
will have a mobile screening unit at three South Florida Wal-Mart stores
this month. The hours will be the same at each location, 8 a.m. to noon and
2 to 6 p.m. On November 17, screeners will be at 8651 NW 13 Terrace in Miami;
November 18, at 9300 NW 77 Avenue, Hialeah Gardens; and November 19, at 2300

SAVE THE DATE - FRESHMAN PINNING CEREMONY
Join the School of Medicine student body, Department of Medical Education and
the Office of Medical Development and Alumni Affairs in passing the torch
to the newest generation of future physicians at the fourth annual Freshman
Pinning Ceremony. This tradition at the medical school was created by a group
of students to establish a link between classes at the School of Medicine.
This year’s event will be held Friday, January 16, at 2 p.m., in the
Schoninger Research Quadrangle. All students, faculty, and alumni are invited
