HAVE BREAKFAST
WITH PRESIDENT SHALALA TUESDAY MORNING, JUNE 26, 8-10 A.M.
All faculty and
staff are invited to join the School of Medicine in a warm welcome for
President Donna Shalala at an informal gathering tomorrow morning, Tuesday,
June 26, 8 to 10 a.m. The event will be held at the Schoninger Research
Quadrangle, the spectacular new plaza that is now open following completion
of the Batchelor Children's Research Institute and the Lois Pope LIFE
Center. Light breakfast will be available, and all faculty and staff
are encouraged to attend. Enjoy a street fair atmosphere with clowns,
music, and more. To give everyone an opportunity to attend, each office
is asked to coordinate a rotation of employees in half-hour segments.
There will be no speeches or formal presentations, so no half-hour segment
is preferential to another. Please take part in this special event to
welcome our new president.
NEW CURRICULUM
TO BE ADDRESSED AT OPEN MEETING ON JUNE 27
The implementation
of the School of Medicine's new integrated curriculum for August 2001
is on schedule. As a medical school striving for excellence, it is imperative
that the school moves forward with the modernization of its curriculum,
promoting integration, using active adult learning methodologies, and
introducing new content and skills required of physicians in the 21st
century. The new curriculum will be introduced to this fall's entering
class of first-year students, while students currently enrolled will
continue to progress through the existing curriculum. In order to provide
updated information and include interested faculty in this process,
there will be monthly open meetings where information and dialog will
be shared. The steering committee, module leaders, dean, and associate
deans in medical education will attend these meetings to hear from faculty
and answer questions. The next open meeting will be held on June 27
in the RMSB 5th floor auditorium at 5 p.m. Your participation in this
meeting and in all other aspects of this exciting and important initiative
is strongly encouraged.
NIH AWARDS GRANT
TO DR. MICHAEL FRENCH TO STUDY ECONOMICS OF ALCOHOLISM SERVICES
Michael French,
Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Public
Health, has received a $2.6 million grant over five years from the National
Institutes of Health to conduct an economic analysis of alcohol abuse
services. The project will draw from a current study funded by the National
Institute on Drug Abuse that focuses on developing and testing economic
evaluations for drug abuse interventions. Dr. French and his team of
investigators will test these methods' efficacy in studying alcoholism
interventions.
