ZUBROD MEMORIAL LECTURE, UM/SYLVESTER RESEARCH POSTER SESSION
Carlos L. Arteaga, M.D., professor of medicine and cancer biology and director of the Breast Cancer Research Program and SPORE at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Comprehensive Cancer Center, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, will deliver this year’s Zubrod Memorial Lecture on June 3 at noon in the second floor of the Jackson Memorial Hospital Diagnostic Treatment Center. Dr. Arteaga will discuss “From Sarcoma Growth Factor to TGF-beta Targeted Therapies in Human Neoplasia.” The event will also feature the announcement of UM/Sylvester’s annual cancer research awards. CERTIFICATION FOR HUMAN SUBJECTS RESEARCH
The certification for human subjects research for some individuals will lapse by the end of June, depending on when initial certification was achieved. COMING SOON: TRAVEL WEBSITE DEBUTS FOR UM STAFF, FACULTY
Launching this summer, e-Cane’s Travel, a self-booking travel reservation tool, will provide the most cost-effective way for planning business travel. e-Cane’s Travel reduces surf time by retrieving travel information and fares from dozens of sources, such as such as Orbitz, Expedia, and AA.com, and displays them in a single screen. This new service is unique as it facilitates direct billing to the UM Ghost Card, and includes 24-hour customer service travel agency support. “MIAMI LITE”- WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES
The Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) is starting a new session of “Miami Lite,” a weight loss program for individuals with Type 2 diabetes. The program is open to the public, and will help participants with weight loss, nutrition, portion size control, diabetes education, weight management techniques and guidelines for exercise. The program will begin on Thursday from 8 to 10 a.m. on the first floor of the DRI, 1450 N.W. 10th Ave. Participants will meet Thursdays at 8 a.m. for the next 12 weeks. CONVERSATIONS ABOUT CANCER SERIES
Xue-Lan Wen, M.D., a board-certified acupuncturist and assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the School of Medicine, and Fariba Ostovary, A.R.N.P., a nurse practitioner counselor at the Courtelis Center for Psychosocial Oncology, will be discussing “Health Benefits of Acupuncture” as part of the Conversations about Cancer series Thursday at UM/Sylvester at Deerfield Beach from noon to 1 p.m. The Deerfield Beach facility is located at 1192 East Newport Center Drive, Suite 100. MEDICAL EDUCATION GRAND ROUNDS
Helen MacRae, M.D., the D.H. Gales Director of the Surgical Skills Centre at the University of Toronto, will be the guest speaker at Medical Education Grand Rounds on Friday at noon in the Rosenstiel Medical Science Building, fifth floor. Lunch will be served. The title of Dr. MacRae’s presentation is “Technical Skills Labs: Flight Simulators of the Future?” Dr. MacRae will explore the research in technical skills acquisition, help participants understand how technical skills laboratories are being used to enhance skills acquisition in undergraduate and post-graduate education, and discuss how a skills lab curriculum can be implemented in a residency program. SOUTH FLORIDA SCI MODEL SYSTEM ROVING SYMPOSIUM
The South Florida SCI Model System will sponsor a Special Roving Symposium “Opening Gates to Higher Education” with a panel of representatives from Florida International University, Miami Dade College Access Program, MEED at Wolfson Campus, Abilities of Florida, and The English Center. The presentation will cover the different institutions’ admission criteria, financial aid, short-term vocational and college training opportunities, services available for students with a disability, and job placement services. INTENSIVE GERIATRIC TRAINING: PSYCHOLOGY MODULE
The School of Medicine, the Miami Area Geriatric Education Center (MAGEC), and the Miami VA Medical Center's Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC), is hosting a three-day conference at the Diabetes Research Institute from Wednesday through Friday this week. The conference provides licensed psychologists with 20 hours of geriatric training on various topics. Registration is $100 for all three days, or $35 per day for partial registration.

INTENSIVE GERIATRIC TRAINING: SOCIAL WORK MODULE
The Miami VA Medical Center's Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC), the Miami Area Geriatric Education Center (MAGEC), and Barry University's School of Social Work will be hosting the Intensive Geriatric Training: Social Work Module on June 5, 12, 19 and 26 at Barry University in Miami Shores. The program offers social workers, marriage and family therapists, and mental health counselors 10 different 4-hour modules in understanding and meeting the needs of the older adult population. Registration is $10 per session for UM/JMH/VA employees and participants may choose from the different module sessions. WRITING BETTER RESEARCH PAPERS
The Office of Research is sponsoring a workshop on June 21 entitled “The Write Stuff: Three Hours to Better Research Papers.” Gina Maranto, an English composition lecturer at the University, will be conducting the seminar from 2 to 5 p.m. in the sixth floor conference room of the Diabetes Research Institute. After attending the workshop, participants should be able to frame their work for a broader audience while keeping it relevant to their field, ensure that readers don’t drown in jargon, write with greater force, conciseness, and clarity, recognize when graphs and charts will be most effective, streamline the writing process, and increase the chances their papers will be accepted for publication. MEDICAL EDUCATION GRAND ROUNDS AND WORKSHOP
Ronald Clark, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy at the School of Medicine, will be the guest speaker at Medical Education Grand Rounds on Friday, June 25, at noon in the fifth floor of the Rosenstiel Medical Science Building. Lunch will be served. The title of Dr. Clark’s presentation is “Proposal to Modify the Lecture System as a Learning Environment.” Dr. Clark currently works with David Gordon, M.D. in the Center for Research in Medical Education where, in conjunction with three neurologists from other institutions and a team of educational research specialists, they are producing interactive programs and journal articles for medical students and physicians. He will be presenting a vision of the future learning environment, inviting views for maintaining or modifying the current lecture system, and discussing computer software applications most applicable to the learning environment. SURVIVAL SKILLS FOR SCIENTISTS
The Office of Graduate Studies and the Postdoctoral Programs Office will host a Professional Skills and Ethics Workshop, otherwise known as “Survival Skills for Scientists,” on July 19 and 20 at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Studies. The one credit, two-day workshop for senior graduate students and postdoctoral fellows will explore how to take charge of your career, 10 Habits of Highly Effective Scholars, the specifics of writing a scientific paper, ethical case studies, and more. It will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days at the Science and Administration Building on the Rosenstiel campus. Lunch will be provided. Seating is limited. INTENSIVE GERIATRIC TRAINING CONFERENCE
The UM Miami Area Geriatric Education Center (MAGEC) and the Miami VA Medical Center's Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) will be hosting the Intensive Geriatric Training Conference on June 23-25 at the Westin Fort Lauderdale hotel. The goal of this three-day conference is to provide licensed healthcare professionals with training in the delivery of efficient interdisciplinary team care in order to meet the health care needs of older adults. Continuing education credits will be available for selected medical disciplines. This event has been approved for tuition remission for a limited number of full-time University of Miami employees (partial registration is also available.)
