YOUR VOICE COUNTS AS SCHOOL PREPARES
TO KICK OFF MAJOR CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

As you may already know, the School of Medicine is set to launch a substantive capital campaign this fall as part of the University of Miami's comprehensive campaign to raise funds in support of future projects and planned initiatives. Your support and feedback are essential to a successful campaign, and everyone is invited to get involved. Go on-line today to review the School of Medicine's Case Statement for the campaign, a report on the school's vision for the future and specific areas that are targeted for growth. The statement is still a draft document, and the school's leadership wants your feedback and suggestions to make this the best possible statement of the School of Medicine's vision and priorities. Visit http://www.med.miami.edu/capitalcampaign to review the Case Statement. A feedback form is provided for your comments. You will need to use your Microsoft Outlook username and password to gain access.

DID YOU KNOW…? FROM 28 FRESHMEN TO 142,
AND OTHER MILESTONES OF THE FIRST 50 YEARS

On September 22, 1952, as the University of Miami School of Medicine entered the ranks of accredited medical institutions around the country, 25 men and 3 women selected from 500 applicants entered the ranks of physicians-in-training as the Class of 1956. Dr. Homer F. Marsh, associate dean, and a faculty of five that included three anatomists and two biochemists welcomed these courageous students as they embarked on their noble profession. Today the freshman class boasts 142 of the nation's top students (85 women and 57 men), led by more than 1,000 full-time faculty members in 17 clinical and 7 basic science departments. This fall the University of Miami School of Medicine will honor the Class of 1956 through the Class of 2002 and will commemorate other milestones in history with the celebration of its 50th anniversary. Exciting events are planned for faculty, staff, and the community alike. Look for the latest details on anniversary activities in the upcoming June issue of Medical Center Update, and stay tuned to campus publications for a schedule of future events.

Stuart Toledano, M.D., professor and director of hematology/oncology in the Department of Pediatrics, weighs in on the importance of studying the long-term effects of cancer treatment for children in a news story posted on HealthScout.com.
