UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCES PHILLIP FROST AS
NEW CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Physician-entrepreneur Phillip Frost, M.D., has assumed chairmanship of the University of Miami Board of Trustees, succeeding Carlos M. de la Cruz, Sr. Dr. Frost is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of IVAX Corporation, a Miami-based generic pharmaceutical firm. A member of the UM Board of Trustees for 18 years, Dr. Frost also has served as president of the Lowe Museum Friends of Art. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the 2001 National Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award and the annual Wharton Business School's Business Statesman Award.

STEM CELL PIONEER VISITS MEDICAL SCHOOL
TO RECEIVE AWARD AND DISCUSS RESEARCH

The Lois Pope LIFE International Research Award has been granted to James Thomson, V.M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of anatomy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine, and the UM School of Medicine will welcome him for a special lecture this Tuesday, January 8, at 4 p.m. in the 7th floor auditorium of the Lois Pope LIFE Center. Dr. Thomson, who also serves as chief pathologist of the Wisconsin Regional Primate Research Center, was the first scientist to isolate human embryonic stem cells and is a pioneer in continuing related research.

LUNCHEON TO BENEFIT PROJECT MEDISHARE

Support Project Medishare and its international health initiatives at "A Day of Hope for Haiti," a luncheon and art auction featuring guest speaker Dr. Maya Angelou. The event will be held on the Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines ship "Explorer of the Seas," out of the Port of Miami. Boarding will commence at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 12 at the Pier 4 entrance. A reception and silent auction will be held from 11 a.m. to noon, followed by a luncheon featuring Dr. Maya Angelou. A live auction from 1 to 2 p.m. will conclude the day's events. A tax-deductible donation of $100 per person may be paid at the door by cash or check, payable to Project Medishare. All who wish to attend must RSVP to Gladymir Veillaird at 305-757-9555 or Kathy Green at 305-573-0335. Due to new security precautions, you will be asked to provide your date of birth, nationality, and either a driver's license number or passport number when confirming your reservation. Upon boarding the ship, you also will need to present this identification. Reservations will be accepted no later than noon today, January 7. No one may attend who has not provided the above information in advance. UM COMMUNITY RAISES $1 MILLION
FOR THE 2001 UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN

A team effort of faculty, staff, and students shattered the University's goal of $700,000 for the 2001 United Way campaign and raised a record $1 millionóa 47 percent increase over last year's campaign. Among the many ways the University community raised funds were departmental sales and raffles, employee pledges, record student participation, and collections at an Orange Bowl game.

KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR NEW HEALTH
CARE MEMBER ID CARD IN YOUR MAIL

If you are enrolled in the University's health care plan, you should have received a UnitedHealthcare member ID card for 2002 in the mail. The University group number has changed, so it is important that you discard the 2001 member ID card and replace it with the new card. If you have not received your 2002 member ID card, contact UnitedHealthcare's member service at 888-334-6970.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM WILL BOOST
YOUR PLEDGE TO COACHES VS. CANCER

The Department of Athletics and American Cancer Society are teaming up against cancer, and you can join the fight. Support the Coaches vs. Cancer Foundation during February by making a pledge online at http://www.hurricanesports.com. Your pledge of 10¢ - $1 will be multiplied by every point the Hurricanes women's basketball team scores in a particular game that month. All participants will be automatically entered to win a pair of women's basketball 2002-2003 season tickets.

MANDATORY COURSE FOR BLOODBORNE PATHOGEN
AND TUBERCULOSIS TRAINING AVAILABLE THIS MONTH

The "OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens and Tuberculosis Training" course is mandatory for all who have the potential for exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. The course will be held January 7, 10 a.m. to noon, in the Dominion Parking Garage, Suite 155. You will learn about bloodborne pathogens, biomedical waste disposal, latex allergy, and tuberculosis control measures and regulations. You also will learn how to protect yourself from infection. The course will be offered again on January 14 and 28, same time and location. For more information or to register, call 305-243-3090.

CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSE TEACHES
THE ART AND SCIENCE OF ACUPUNCTURE

Physicians will learn to integrate advanced concepts of acupuncture into healthcare practice and gain proficiency in this discipline at "The Art and Science of Acupuncture," beginning January 12, with classes continuing through May. Classes will be held at the Sieron Building on the medical campus, 1425 N.W. 10th Avenue. Participants can attend as many of the course installments as they wish. Tuition remission is available for University of Miami employees. For other attendants, the complete series fee is $2,600, including required materials. Single installments are $225 each. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFERS INFORMATIVE
COURSE ON UNIVERSITY'S ACCOUNTING SYSTEM

The two-part course "Financial Records System" begins January 15, 2 to 5 p.m., at the Dominion Parking Garage, Suite 155; and concludes on January 17, same time and location. Participants will gain an overview of the University's accounting system and will learn to interpret the Report 90's Year-to-Date Summary, Report of Transactions, and Open Commitment Status. CME CONFERENCE TO EXPLORE CURRENT
AND FUTURE PEDIATRICS PRACTICES

Registrations are now being accepted for the 11th annual Masters of Pediatrics Conference, sponsored by the Departments of Pediatrics and Dermatology. The symposium will explore topics in general pediatrics, pediatric dermatology, and pediatric pulmonology and allergy. Many internationally renowned speakers and School of Medicine faculty will present lectures, and this year's keynote address, entitled "Children's Health Care 2002 and Beyond," will be delivered by UM President Donna E. Shalala. The conference will be held January 16 - 21, at the Wyndham Miami Beach Resort. A number of educational tracks are available to all UM faculty, staff, and students. TRAINING COURSE OFFERS REVIEW OF SAFETY
AND COMPLIANCE REGULATIONS IN THE LAB

Lean basic biological and chemical laboratory safety principles; emergency procedures; and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations at "Laboratory Safety/Hazardous Waste," presented by the Office of Professional Development and Training. The course is geared toward anyone working in an academic or research laboratory, and will be held January 18, 9 a.m. to noon, at the Dominion Parking Garage, Suite 155.

EARN POST-GRADUATE CERTIFICATION IN HEALTH
CARE MANAGEMENT THROUGH CONTINUING STUDIES

The Post-Graduate Certificate Program in Healthcare Management, offered by the School of Continuing Studies, is now accepting registrations for courses scheduled to begin on January 21. The program consists of six courses of 15 hours each, at a cost of $375 per course. It is designed for those who work in a health care setting and want to gain advanced training in administration of healthcare services. Tuition remission is available for University of Miami employees, if the course is determined to be work-related. TOWN MEETING ON CANCER TO OFFER FORUM
FOR CASE DISCUSSION AND COLLABORATION

The Departments of Health Information, Quality Assurance, and Public Relations at Jackson Memorial Hospital are sponsoring a "Town Meeting on Cancer," February 8, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Diagnostic Treatment Center, Room 252. The event is part of the JMH Public Cancer Education Plan, and the focus will be on breast cancer, commemorating the tenth anniversary of the JMH Breast Health Center.
