CONSTRUCTION TRAFFIC NOTICE
Two lanes of Northwest 14th Street are closed because of construction. Faculty and staff are urged to avoid 14th Street in front of the Professional Arts Center. Alternate routes should be considered:

To I-95 North or South ... Take Bob Hope Road and continue south to Northwest 11th Street. Turn right on 11th Street to 12th Avenue. Turn right on 12th Avenue and enter the ramp to eastbound 836, which leads to I-95 north and south.

To 836 West ... Take Northwest 16th Street west by the VA Medical Center to 14th Avenue, then turn left (south) to Northwest 14th Street where you can turn right and follow signs to 836 … OR take Northwest 20th Street west to 17th or 27th Avenue. Turn left (south) on either avenue to the 836 westbound ramp.

DNA MICROARRAY WORKSHOP
The DNA Microarray Facility is pleased to sponsor a free one day workshop entitled "Introduction to Microarray Informatics," Monday, March 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the computer classroom at Calder Medical Library. This is a hands-on workshop during which participants will be introduced to image analysis, data filtering, normalization, and clustering. This workshop is appropriate for students, postdocs, faculty and research staff who use or plan to use DNA microarrays. Please review the syllabus at: http://www.biomed.miami.edu/arrays. BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING LECTURE
The Department of Biomedical Engineering is honored to present Robin Poole, Ph.D., director of the Joint Diseases Laboratory at Montreal's Shriner’s Hospital for Children, professor at McGill University's department of surgery and an adjunct associate professor at the University of Montreal, in the Kroc Foundation Distinguished Lecturer Series. Dr. Poole is an internationally recognized researcher in the area of cartilage development and arthritis. He will present "Articular Cartilage Injury: Role of Cellular Response in the Injury," this Friday at 11 a.m. in the McArthur Engineering Annex, MCA 202, on the Coral Gables Campus. AGING AND THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology and The Center on Aging are co-sponsoring a special seminar relevant to aging and the immune system. Jan Cerny, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chairman, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, University of Maryland School of Medicine, will discuss "Functional heterogeneity of mature splenic B cells." Dr. Cerny is a leader in the field of immune function and its alteration during aging. CENTER ON AGING DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES
The Center on Aging invites all faculty and staff to its Distinguished Lecture Series. Richard Schulz, Ph.D., professor of psychiatry and Director of the University Center on Social and Urban Research at the University of Pittsburgh, will discuss issues of chronic stress in the elderly, at 4 p.m. February 27 in the Randy Johnson Lecture Hall, on the fifth floor of the Flipse Building, 5665 Ponce de Leon Boulevard. DEPARTMENT OF REHABILITATION MEDICINE SYMPOSIUM
A Roving Symposium sponsored by the South Florida Spinal Cord Injury Model System will be held on Thursday, February 26, from Noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Jackson Rehabilitation Center, third-floor auditorium. SCI EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS
The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine in conjunction with the South Florida Spinal Cord Injury Model System is proud to announce the availability of two new educational videos; “Women’s Sexuality After SCI: Understanding the Changes and Finding Ways to Respond,” hosted by Marca L. Sipski, M.D., and a taping of the 2003 ASIA Pre-Course, “From the Bench to the Body - Translational Research and SCI: Avoiding Potential Pitfalls,” with co-Directors Marca L. Sipski, M.D. and W. REHABILITATION MEDICINE GRAND ROUNDS
The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine presents “Methylprednisolone and Acute Spinal Cord Injury,” presented by Tie Qian, M.D., voluntary professor of clinical rehabilitation medicine. Dr. Qian will review the history of the National Acute Spinal Cord Injury Studies and usage of methylprednisolone, including the controversies surrounding use of the drug. MASTERS OF PSYCHIATRY CONFERENCE
The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, in conjunction with the Florida Psychiatric Society, is sponsoring its sixth annual Masters of Psychiatry Conference this Friday and Saturday, at the Royal Palm Crowne Plaza Resort in Miami Beach. IDENTITY THEFT SEMINAR
The Employee Assistance Program is offering “Identity Theft: Prevention and Recovery.” The seminar will provide useful information and resources on what is the fastest-growing white collar crime. It will also help participants understand how to reduce their risk of becoming a victim and what to do in the event of an identity theft. “MIAMI LITE” WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM
The Diabetes Research Institute is starting a new session of “Miami Lite,” a weight loss program for individuals with Type 2 diabetes. This program is open to the public. It is designed to help participants with weight loss, nutrition, controlling portion sizes, diabetes education, weight management techniques and guidelines for exercise. Participants will meet every Thursday from 8 to 10 a.m. on the first floor of the DRI beginning this Thursday. The program lasts for 12 weeks. LEADERSHIP SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
This program is limited to 30 participants, but those who enroll will be guided to a greater understanding of leadership, quality, continuous improvement, strategic planning, the team concept, managing change, diversity, creativity, and ethics and values. The program features self-directed, participant-centered activities and participants practice using these concepts. The program consists of seven sessions, all from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., on March 12, 19, 26, and April 2, 7, 16 and 30. The deadline to apply is this Friday. The ideal candidate is a research professional (A06), administrative/professional (A01), or faculty member, has worked at the University of Miami for at least one year and received an above-average total rating on each performance appraisal, has demonstrated a potential for leadership through volunteer service to the community or the University of Miami and through continued study for professional development, and has his or her supervisor's endorsement. LEARN TO WRITE WINNING GRANTS
The Office of Research is sponsoring “Write Winning Grants” on Thursday and Friday, March 4 and 5, at the JMH Diagnostic Treatment Center room 259. Stephen W. Russell, founding and managing member of Grant Writers' Seminars and Workshops, L.L.C., will conduct the sessions. Russell has received grant support from the National Institutes of Health as a principal investigator since the early 1970s including individual, group, center, and training grants. Attendance at the seminar is limited and participants will be selected through an application process. PEDIATRIC NEPHROLOGY SEMINAR

S.A.F.E.
