DIRECTOR OF NIH CENTER ON COMPLEMENTARY
MEDICINE TO DELIVER GRAND ROUNDS
Reserve your space today to hear the latest on the current state of complementary
medicine from one of the field’s leaders when the Department of Family
Medicine and Community Health welcomes Stephen E. Straus, M.D., director of
the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine of the National
Institutes of Health. Straus will discuss “From Promises to Proof: Studying
Complementary and Alternative Medicine,” at an interdisciplinary presentation
of Grand Rounds on December 17, 1 to 2 p.m., in the James A. Batten Apex Center
and Auditorium, seventh floor of the Lois Pope LIFE Building. Contact Blanca

WELLNESS FACILITY PLANNING AT THE
MEDICAL CENTER NEEDS YOUR INPUT
The School of Medicine is in the final stages of planning a state-of-the-art
Wellness Facility and Program designed specifically to meet the needs of the
medical center students, faculty, and employees at both UM and Jackson. Located
on the top floors of a new parking garage to be constructed near the Professional
Arts Center, the 60,000 square foot facility will feature weight training and
cardiovascular exercise equipment, a full range of fitness classes, and amenities
including private showers with towel service, lockers, and a specialized food
service to offer fresh juice, health shakes, nutritional sandwiches, and more.
To ensure that the final program and facility plans meet potential member needs
and expectations, you may be asked to participate in a telephone survey soon.
This survey will take only a short time and will be invaluable to those planning
the facility. If you are called, your participation is strongly encouraged.

RECOVERY AT MIAMI PROJECT LECTURE SERIES
The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis presents the third installment in the 2002-2003
Gail F. Beach Memorial Visiting Lectureship Series. Serge Rossignol, M.D.,
Ph.D., director of the Research Centre in Neurological Sciences at the Université de
Montréal, will present “Recovery of Locomotion in Spinal Transected
Animals” on December 4, noon, at the James A. Batten Apex Center and
Auditorium on the seventh floor of the Lois Pope LIFE Center. Rossignol is
a leader in the study of the brainstem and spinal control of locomotion. For

CANES FACE OFF AGAINST VIRGINIA TECH
FOR FINAL HOME GAME OF THE SEASON
The Miami Hurricanes have one opponent left to defeat as they head toward defending
their National Championship title. The Hurricanes will host Virginia Tech this
Saturday at 1 p.m. in the last home football game of the season. Join
the crowd to bid farewell to the senior class as they play in the Orange Bowl
for the last time. Tickets are still available at the Hurricane Ticket
Office in the Hecht Athletic Center on the Coral Gables campus or by calling
