UM/SYLVESTER DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES
Charles D. Lopez, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor, Division of Hematology
and Medical Oncology, Oregon Health and Science University, will present “Clasping
the RB/EZF Apoptotic Pathways: Implications for Tumorigenesis and Cancer
Therapy,” as part of the UM/Sylvester Distinguished Lecture Series
in the UM/Sylvester conference room 1301 on Friday from noon to 1 p.m. This
didactic lecture series provides a forum for outstanding clinical and translational
researchers to interact with UM/Sylvester faculty. The focus of the series
is to bring basic science and clinical researchers together to discuss recent
advances in the understanding and treatment of human cancer. Lunch will

CONVERSATIONS ABOUT CANCER SERIES
W. Jarrard Goodwin, M.D., F.A.C.S., director, UM/Sylvester, and medical director
of UM/Sylvester at Deerfield Beach, will present “Head and Neck Cancer” at
UM/Sylvester at Deerfield Beach on Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. The Deerfield
Beach facility is located at 1192 East Newport Center Drive, Suite 100. Dr.
Goodwin’s presentation, part of the Conversations about Cancer series,

FACULTY SENATE MEETING
There will be a Faculty Senate meeting tomorrow at 3:15 p.m. in the Hurricane
100 Room of the Convocation Center on the Coral Gables campus. All faculty

REHABILITATION MEDICINE GRAND ROUNDS
Fernando Branco, M.D., assistant professor of clinical rehabilitation medicine
in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, will speak on “Exercise
and Aging” Friday from 8 to 9 a.m. at the Jackson Rehabilitation Center
third-floor auditorium. Dr. Branco will provide an introduction to exercise
physiology and discuss exercise testing, evaluation, physiological parameters,
prescriptions and indications of exercise in relation to aging. No RSVP is

CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY SEAT CHECK
The Injury Free Coalition for Kids at the University of Miami/ Jackson Memorial
Medical Center will hold a child passenger safety seat check event on Friday.
Motor vehicle crashes kill more children than any other cause. But while
car and booster seats are known to save children's lives, most are improperly
used. Families may bring cars to have the installation of their child safety
seat or booster seat checked by a certified child passenger safety technician.
Participants will receive road safety education. The event will take place
from 2 to 5 p.m. in the parking lot in front of the Ryder Trauma Center,
9th Avenue and 18th Street. Please contact Julie Belkowitz, M.D., Gayane

DISTINGUISHED FACULTY AWARD TO BE PRESENTED TO DR. MYRON D.
GINSBERG
Myron D. Ginsberg, M.D., of the Department of Neurology, will be presented
with this year’s Faculty Senate Distinguished Faculty Scholar award on
Friday at 3 p.m. in the Storer Auditorium, School of Business Administration.
At the award ceremony, Dr. Ginsberg will also present "Preventing Brain
Damage after Stroke - a Journey from Bench to Bedside.” A reception will

OFFICE OF TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER SEMINAR AND OPEN HOUSE
The Office of Technology Transfer is sponsoring a seminar and open house to
mark the relocation of the office. Simona A. Levi-Minzi, Ph.D., J.D., will
present “University Research and Intellectual Property,” on Thursday
at 11 a.m. in the eighth-floor conference room of the Mailman Center for
Child Development. After the seminar, there will be an open house reception
at the department’s new location, in suite 2012 of the Sewell Building.

THE CENTER ON AGING DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES
Barbara Resnick, Ph.D., CRNP, FAAN, associate professor in the Department of
Adult Health at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, will discuss "Innovative
Strategies to Motivating Older Adults to Engage in Health Behaviors" as
part of The Center on Aging’s Distinguished Lecture Series Thursday
at noon in the Hurricane 100 Room, Convocation Center, 1245 Walsh Avenue.
Dr. Resnick is nationally known for her work in motivating older adults to
achieve their highest functional level, maintain their health and overall

GAIL F. BEACH MEMORIAL 2003-2004 VISITING LECTURESHIP SERIES.

NIH REGIONAL SEMINAR ON PROGRAM FUNDING AND GRANTS ADMINISTRATION
The Office of Extramural Research sponsors semi-annual regional seminars on
program funding and grants May 5 to 7 at the Wyndham Miami Beach Resort.
These seminars are intended to help demystify the application and review
process, clarify federal regulations and policies, and highlight current
areas of special interest or concern. The seminars are appropriate for grant
administrators, researchers new to NIH, and graduate students. Computer labs
will be offered in conjunction with the 2004 regional seminars, but computer

FAST QUANT TWO-DAY WET LABORATORY WORKSHOP
The Laboratory for Clinical and Biological Studies (LCBS), and Schleicher & Schuell
BioScience, Inc., will host a Fast Quant Two-Day Wet Laboratory Workshop. The
workshop will demonstrate how to quantify multiple cytokines all at once in
your lab with protein microarrays in a familiar ELISA footprint on Wednesday,
May 5, and Thursday, May 6. The wet laboratory workshop will be on May 5th
from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the LCBS facility, Suite 118 of the Fox Building.
On May 6th, there will be a lecture on FAST Quant System Solution & Sample

TIME MANAGEMENT SEMINAR
The Employee Assistance Program, in conjunction with UnitedHealthcare and Optum,
will present a lunchtime Time Management Seminar featuring Herman Vega, Ph.D.
Dr. Vega and EAP’s Mary Remon will discuss how to use values to set
goals and priorities, how to identify time wasters, how to use time-management
principles, and how to allocate time, among other topics. The session will
be held from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, at the Professional Development

IDX OPEN REFERRALS TRAINING
The Office of Business Information Management Systems announces IDX open referral
training sessions, designed to train employees who enter appointments or
referrals into the IDX system. Training is mandatory for all employees who
schedule appointments and/or enter referrals. This training will allow the
employee to understand, create, and edit referrals, and link referrals to
the appointment scheduling section. There are multiple dates and sessions

are encouraged to register for one of the Skills for Service Delivery Retreats
offered this spring. Learn how to identify and meet customer needs and
expectations, and motivate your staff to apply essential patient-oriented
service behavior. Full-day retreats will be offered on May 14,
18, and 28 at the Professional Development Training Office on the Medical

Applications for the 2004 Annual UM/Sylvester Cancer Research Poster Session
are due May 14. A handout containing all abstracts submitted for display
will be distributed on June 3 at the Annual Zubrod Memorial Lecture. To ensure

ZUBROD MEMORIAL LECTURE, UM/SYLVESTER RESEARCH POSTER SESSION
Carlos L. Arteaga, M.D., professor of medicine and cancer biology and director
of the Breast Cancer Research Program and SPORE at the Vanderbilt-Ingram
Comprehensive Cancer Center, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, will
deliver this year’s Zubrod Memorial Lecture on June 3 at noon in the
second floor of the Jackson Memorial Hospital Diagnostic Treatment Center.
Dr. Arteaga will discuss “From Sarcoma Growth Factor to TGF-beta Targeted
Therapies in Human Neoplasia.” The event will also feature the announcement

MEDICAL EDUCATION GRAND ROUNDS
Helen MacRae, M.D., the D.H. Gales Director of the Surgical Skills Centre at
the University of Toronto, will be the guest speaker at Medical Education
Grand Rounds on Friday, May 28, at noon in the Rosenstiel Medical Science
Building, fifth floor. Lunch will be served. The title of Dr. MacRae’s
presentation is “Technical Skills Labs: Flight Simulators of the Future?” Dr.
MacRae will explore the research in technical skills acquisition, help participants
understand how technical skills laboratories are being used to enhance skills
acquisition in undergraduate and post-graduate education, and discuss how
a skills lab curriculum can be implemented in a residency program. For more
