CANCER SYMPOSIUM NEXT WEEK
UM/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is sponsoring the “Renal Cell Carcinoma Symposium” from 8 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. October 18 at the JW Marriott Hotel, 1109 Brickell Avenue. Lecturers include representatives from the NIH, Baylor College of Medicine, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and UM/Sylvester. Registration is $15, which includes a continental breakfast, refreshments and course materials, and CME credits are available. CDC SARS WEBCAST AVAILABLE AT CALDER LIBRARY
VHS videotapes of recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention webcasts on SARS are now available at Calder Library. The programs were originally broadcast by satellite and online on September 23 and 30 and focused on whether United States healthcare professionals were prepared for an outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. Each program is two hours long and can be found at the Learning Resource Center at Calder Library.

MACDONALD FOUNDATION WEB SITE NOW ONLINE
The Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation Center for Medical Genetics has just gone live online at medgen.med.miami.edu. The new center, headed by director Louis J. “Skip” Elsas, M.D., developed a site with a tremendous depth of information about research, education and community service as it relates to the discipline of medical genetics.

HURRICANES FOOTBALL YOUTH DAY
On October 18, the University of Miami will host “Youth Day” at the Orange Bowl when the Hurricanes take on the Temple Owls at noon. Log on to hurricanesports.com and print out the youth coupon for the special ticket price of $8 for all children under 17. Adults accompanying children can purchase tickets for $20. These coupons can be redeemed in advance at the Hurricane Ticket Office or on game day at the northwest plaza of the Orange Bowl.

FIRST MEDICAL SCHOOL TRAINERS’ FORUM
If you conduct skills, management, or development training for your department or other areas of the University of Miami medical school, your attendance is required at this one-time forum, Monday, October 13 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Professional Development and Training office, Dominion Parking Garage, Suite 155. The goal is to identify trainers, better understand training conducted throughout the medical school, and determine areas of common interests and needs with the hope of developing a trainers’ network. UM/SYLVESTER LAUNCHES PRINT CAMPAIGN
UM/Sylvester will be kicking off a print advertising campaign beginning Sunday, October 12, through the end of the calendar year. Please look for ads in the Miami Herald Neighbors section (Aventura, Gables, Kendall, Miami Beach) on Sundays; the Miami Herald-Broward edition on Sundays; el Nuevo Herald on Mondays, Thursdays, or Fridays; the community newspapers in Margate/Coconut Creek, Coral Springs, Deerfield Beach, Plantation, Pompano Beach, and Sunrise on Tuesdays and Thursdays; the Jewish Journal-Broward on Thursdays; the Jewish Journal-Palm Beach South on Tuesdays; and the Palm Beach Post (South and Central) on Wednesdays. Ads will also run in Selecta Magazine in November, Palm Beach Illustrated in December, and Nexos Magazine (American Airlines) in December. E-mail any questions or feedback to Judy Hayden at jhayden@miami.edu.

BREAST CANCER MONTH EDUCATIONAL EVENTS
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, UM/Sylvester at Deerfield Beach is hosting two educational programs. Tuesday, October 14, from noon to 1 p.m., Joyce Slingerland, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute, will present “Tackling Breast Cancer through Multidisciplinary Research.” On Tuesday, October 21, from noon to 1 p.m., Deborah Heros, M.D., director of the Division of Neurological Oncology, will present “Neurological Implications of Breast Cancer.” Lunch will be served at both presentations. REHABILITATION MEDICINE GRAND ROUNDS

TICKETS ON SALE FOR NEIL GOLDBERG'S CIRQUE
Due to overwhelming interest in the Momentum: The Campaign for the University of Miami launch celebration, all tickets to the Friday, October 17, event featuring Neil Goldberg's Cirque have been dispersed. If you received tickets to the October 17 show that you will not be using, please return them to the Office of Events Management (locator code 2410) so your colleagues can enjoy the show. However, Neil Goldberg's Cirque is staying on the Coral Gables campus for one more night, Saturday, October 18. This full performance of Cirque will be open to the public at the Convocation Center. Tickets are on sale now for $24, $34 and $44. Tickets are available through the Convocation Center box office and Ticketmaster. ULTRASOUND AWARENESS MONTH EVENTS
October is Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month. Luis Izquierdo, M.D., director of diagnostic ultrasound, and Barbara Carbajales, supervisor of the Division of Ultrasound at the Kendall Medical Center, are offering a tour of the ultrasound facility for faculty, staff, students, and the general public on Monday, October 27, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The Kendall Medical Center is located at 8932 SW 97th Avenue. GRIEF WORKSHOP
A day-long seminar called “Monday Mournings” will address grief in the workplace on Tuesday, October 28. The discussion will be led by Edie Stark, R.N., a well-known certified grief counselor, and CME hours are available for nurses, respiratory therapists, and social workers. Participants will meet in the Jackson Medical Towers, seventh-floor east, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There is a $50 registration fee. Please call 305-585-7134 for more information or to register.

GOLF TOURNAMENT TO FIGHT HEART DISEASE
The first ever Jay Bon Salle Memorial Golf Tournament will tee off on Friday, November 7, to benefit the UM Cardiovascular Center. The tournament is named for Jay Bon Salle, who lost his fight against congenital heart disease two years ago. Participants in this important fundraiser will play at Crandon Park Golf Course on Key Biscayne starting at 1 p.m. November 7, followed by cocktails, dinner, awards, and a silent auction.
