SOUTH FLORIDA SPINAL CORD INJURY MODEL SYSTEM INFORMATIONAL TOUR
The South Florida Spinal Cord Injury Model System presents an informational tour, where participants will receive information regarding the Spinal Cord Injury Out-Patient Clinic at the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, meet and ask questions of investigators at the Miami VA SCI Center of Excellence, participate in a formal presentation on the latest research outcomes at the Lois Pope LIFE Center/The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, and learn more about the community outreach programs for individuals with spinal cord injuries. Joseph C. SOCIAL WORK GRAND ROUNDS: THE HISTORY OF HIV
Social Work Grand Rounds presents Jonell Efantis Potter, Ph.D., A.R.N.P., assistant professor in the Department of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Ana Garcia, L.C.S.W., adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics Division of Infectious Diseases & Immunology. They will discuss the history of HIV over the last 20 years and its impact on women, children and families from the nursing and social work perspective today (Tuesday) from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Lois Pope LIFE Center, seventh-floor auditorium. Participants will discuss the psychosocial implications for women and children living with HIV, the medical/primary care changes and the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach and its impact on the provider-patient relationship, and identify the ethical dilemmas, policy issues and research needs surrounding this population. HIV/AIDS FORUM
The Comprehensive AIDS Program is hosting a forum for UM faculty, staff and community agency representatives to share information about HIV/AIDS clinical trial and research opportunities.  The forum will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Monday, December 6, in the Lois Pope LIFE Center, seventh-floor auditorium.  Featured presenters include Gordon Dickinson, M.D., professor and chief, Division of Infectious Disease, Department of Medicine, who will present Non-Occupational Post-Exposure Prophylaxis of HIV-1 Infection, and Tracie Miller, M.D., professor and director, Division of Pediatric Clinical Research, Department of Pediatrics, who will present The Changing Nutritional Profile of Pediatric HIV.  The forum will provide a networking opportunity as well as a platform for researchers to present outcomes of their studies, seek advice on recruitment strategies, and present new and existing clinical trial and research opportunities for members to share with patients/clients.  All HIV/AIDS researchers are invited.  RSVP to bmessick@med.miami.edu.

HIV/WORLD AIDS DAY CONFERENCE FOR WOMEN - MANY FACES, ONE DISEASE
The UM Miami Family Care Program in the Departments of Pediatrics - Division of Infectious Disease, Obstetrics and Gynecology Research, and Adolescent Medicine will be a co-sponsor of an HIV/World AIDS Day Conference for Women - "Many Faces, One Disease." The conference will be held on Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Charles Hadley Park Carrie Meek Senior and Cultural Center, 1300 NW 50th Street. Women whose lives are impacted by HIV/AIDS are invited. Amanda Cotter, M.D. from the Department of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology will address "Preparing for Pregnancy," and Carleen Robinson Batista, senior research associate in the Center for Family Studies, will address "Health, Healing and Relaxation." Topics will be presented in English, Spanish and Creole and also include the following: medical concerns, legal issues, women in correctional facilities, and sexuality. NEW VENDOR FOR LANIER SUPPLIES
Beginning Wednesday, Lanier supplies will be available through Office Max. You have three ordering options for your Lanier supplies: via UMeNET, fax at 800-572-6473 with an updated order form, or phone at 800-472-6473. Existing Lanier product numbers have been modified to include the prefix "S1" and the suffix "UM." For example, Lanier product number 480-0053 will be S1-480-0053-UM. CHILD CAR SEAT INSTALLATION CHECK
Do you know most child car seats are not installed correctly? To ensure that your child car seat is installed correctly, a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician will be available on Wednesday, December 8 and 15 in front of the Mailman Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The service is available to everyone who transports children under the age of 12 in their vehicle. CONVERSATIONS ABOUT CANCER SERIES

REASSESS, RELAX AND REJUVENATE: A PRE-HOLIDAY STRESS BUSTER
This interactive EAP seminar will help participants explore options for dealing with the sources of stress and review tips for managing holiday stress.  Participants will also have the opportunity to practice stress management exercises, including meditation, visualization and progressive relaxation. HURRICANE BASKETBALL NEWS
UM Employee Day at the Convocation Center is set for Sunday, January 9, when the Hurricane men's basketball team plays their inaugural ACC game against the North Carolina State Wolfpack at 4 p.m. All full-time University of Miami employees are eligible to receive one complimentary ticket and can purchase up to five additional tickets for $1 each with a valid Cane Card. Ticket sales representatives will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside Au Bon Pain on Tuesday, November 30, and Thursday, December 2. UM/SYLVESTER BRAMAN FAMILY BREAST CANCER INSTITUTE DEVELOPMENTAL GRANT PROGRAM
The Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center has funds available to support one-year pilot projects in the amount of $50,000 to encourage the development of new research directed toward basic, translational and clinical research in breast and ovarian cancers. Support from the Women’s Cancer League allows the institute to fund projects of relevance to ovarian cancer in this round of grant funding.  Graduate students and post-doctoral fellows early in their career are not eligible. THE THIRD ANNUAL KIRK A. AND DOROTHY P. LANDON -AACR PRIZES
The Third Annual Landon-AACR awards will be held on Wednesday, January 19 from noon to 1:35 p.m. at the UM/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, room 1301. The 2004 recipient of the Kirk A. Landon-AACR Prize for Basic Cancer Research, Tony Hunter, Ph.D., professor, Molecular and Cell Biology Laboratory at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, will discuss "Tyrosine Phosphyorylation: From Bench to Bedside." The recipient of the Third Annual Dorothy P. Landon-AACR Prize for Translational Cancer Research, Raymond N. DuBois, M.D., Ph.D., Hortense B. Ingram Professor of Molecular Oncology and director of Cancer Prevention at The Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, will talk about "Molecular Targets for Cancer Prevention." No RSVP is required. TEACHING CONFERENCE ON HEART & STROKE – EMPHASIZING WOMEN’S HEALTH
Registration is open for the 37th Annual Teaching Conference in Clinical Cardiology and Neurology, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, January 28-29 at the Hyatt Regency in Miami. The conference is a primary care update presented by the Center for Research in Medical Education. This year’s focus is heart disease and stroke in women. UM physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurses can register for a reduced fee of $100 ($150 for UM physicians). CME credit and nurse contact hours can be earned up to a maximum of 15.5 hours. Tuition remission is available, awarded on a first-come first-served basis. The conference features a variety of School of Medicine faculty, led by Michael S. Gordon, M.D., Ph.D., David Lee Gordon, M.D., S. HUMAN SUBJECT RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
Sara Czaja, Ph.D., is leading a study of spinal cord injury in an aging population focusing on helping improve the quality of life of the patients and their caregivers. As Americans live longer, more people are aging with spinal cord injuries than ever before, presenting new challenges. This NIH-funded study will examine the value of a home-based program that combines psychological and social intervention, using technology to help patients who have difficulty with mobility. The UM AIDS Clinical Research Unit, under the direction of Margaret Fischl, M.D., is seeking volunteers to participate in an HIV vaccine study for people with HIV who are taking antiretroviral therapy. To qualify, you must meet the following criteria: 18 - 50 years old, taking antiretroviral therapy for ³ 24 months, HIV viral load < 500 copies/ml, CD4 cell count ³ 500 cells/mm3,willing to receive vaccine or placebo (2/3 chance of receiving vaccine) and willing to interrupt antiretroviral drugs following vaccinations. The SPARE Study (Soy Phytoestrogens As Replacement Estrogen) is currently recruiting women between 45-58 years of age to study the role of soy phytoestrogens given in tablet form to prevent bone loss. Participants will be given a physical exam at study entry, an annual mammogram and bone density test, and will be asked to come for 10 study visits over a period of two years for blood tests and to complete questionnaires about diet, exercise, and well-being.
