DR. RAMZI YOUNIS JOINS SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
TO HEAD PEDIATRIC OTOLARYNGOLOGY DIVISION

The Department of Otolaryngology has named Ramzi Younis, M.D., chief of the Division of Pediatric Ear, Nose and Throat. Younis is new to the faculty of the School of Medicine, hailing most recently from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He also has served as chief of pediatric otolaryngology at Yale University. At the University of Miami, Younis will expand the Division of Pediatric Ear, Nose and Throat, looking to create a multi-specialty center for voice, language, sinus, and airway problems in children. REQUIRED QUESTIONNAIRE FOR RECOMBINANT
DNA RESEARCH PROJECTS AVAILABLE ON-LINE

All principal investigators conducting recombinant DNA research at the University of Miami are required to submit a Recombinant DNA Research Questionnaire for review and approval by the University's Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). In some cases this form must be submitted in concert with a grant application and/or prior to commencement of the research. In submitting this form, the principal investigator also must review the NIH guidelines. Completed questionnaires should be forwarded to Tessa Boudreaux, Office of Research, at the Sewell Building, Room 2017A (locator code R-64). The form, April 2002 NIH Guidelines, sample applications, checklists for submission of protocols involving human subjects, and flowcharts illustrating the submission and approval process can be found at www.miami.edu/rdna

RESEARCH LEADERSHIP OFFICE CALLS FOR
APPLICANTS TO MEDICAL SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIPS

The Rockefeller Brothers Fund has announced a call for proposals to the Charles E. Culpeper Scholarships in Medical Science. Applicants for these awards must have completed at least one year of post-doctoral clinical training, cannot be ranked higher than assistant professor, and should be conducting scientific research relevant to human health. Instructions and forms for application can be found on-line at www.rbf.org. The University of Miami may only submit one application and will accept nominations through August 15. WOMEN'S HEALTH INSTITUTE CALLS FOR
LEADERS TO HELP GUIDE FUTURE INITIATIVES

The Institute for Women's Health is accepting applications from interested faculty to join its Leadership Team. Team members will guide strategic planning, goal development, and program planning at the institute. In addition, the Leadership Team will develop the foundation of an advisory board. Applicants should be full-time faculty with a strong interest in women's health or the career development of academic women. FOR PRIVACY AND DATA PROTECTION

The Web Development Group has launched the new Privacy and Data Protection Web site for the UM Ethics Programs. View the revamped Web pages at http://ethics.med.miami.edu. The site's visual enhancements are best viewed with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher, and they have been tested on both MAC and PC browsers, including Netscape 4 and 6, Internet Explorer 4 and 5 and Opera 5.

TRANSCEND ANXIETY AND STRESS AT
FREE WELLNESS MEDITATION COURSE

Quiet your mind and ease your cares away at "I Meditate," a series of meditation classes offered by the Department of Wellness and Recreation. The summer session began May 17, but you can still sign up, and classes are free. A program of weekly small-group seminars on topics that pertain to the protection of human subjects in research continues May 21, with "The Therapeutic Misconceptions," presented by Roberto Dominguez, chair of Medical Sciences Subcommittee "B," noon to 1 p.m., at the Mailman Center, Room 3023. Future seminars continue through December, featuring such topics as "Investigational New Drug Applications." EPIDEMIOLOGY SEMINAR ADDRESSES BEHAVIORAL
INTERVENTIONS FOR PREVENTING HIV AND STD

The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health's Drug Abuse and AIDS Research Center presents a new seminar series sponsored by the center's Intervention Core. This series will foster interdisciplinary collaboration among University scientists, clinicians, and providers to promote and enhance the development of innovative behavioral and clinical interventions in the areas of HIV and drug abuse. The first installment will feature a satellite broadcast from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, entitled "Effective Behavioral Interventions for HIV/STD Prevention." Attendees also will receive information on how they can sign up for training and technical assistance for the interventions presented. The broadcast will be held May 23, 2 to 4 p.m., at the Mailman Center eighth floor auditorium. SAVE THE DATE FOR INTERDEPARTMENTAL
DISCUSSION OF SPIRITUALITY IN MEDICINE

Join the Behavioral Science Program of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, along with several other disciplines, for an Interdepartmental Academic Day to address "Spirituality and Medicine." A primary aim of this conference is to help physicians and other health care workers discuss and learn about the beneficial uses of spirituality in medical settings, such as pediatrics, ob/gyn, and addiction psychiatry. Robert Schwartz, M.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, and Carl Eisdorfer, Ph.D., M.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, will be among the members of a faculty panel that will address spirituality. The event will be held May 29, 8 a.m. to noon, in Jackson's Diagnostic Treatment Center, Room 270. No RSVP or registration fee is required, but please arrive early. Swirl, sip, and swish for a good cause at a special wine tasting presented by The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. "Raise a Glass for a Cure" will be held May 31, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., to benefit the Miami Chapter of the Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis in support of ongoing research at the Miami Project.
