MEDICAL SCHOOL SEARCH COMMITTEE SEEKS INTERNAL CANDIDATES FOR INTERIM ASSOCIATE DEAN POSITION

The School of Medicine is calling for internal candidates with outstanding scientific leadership skills to fill the position of interim associate dean for research and graduate studies. This person will work with the dean and faculty advisors in identifying new research initiatives to lead the continued development of basic and clinical research programs at the medical center. Candidates must have an advanced degree (M.D., Ph.D.) in a branch of biomedical science as well as an active funded research program. Experience in graduate and postgraduate research training and administration is required. This interim associate dean will lead efforts in reorganizing and coordinating the School of Medicine's research and graduate education infrastructure, including executing a strategic plan, attracting research funding, and allocating institutional research resources. ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF UM/SYLVESTER TO LEAD SOUTHEAST REGION OF NCI HISPANIC CANCER INITIATIVE

Redes en AcciÛn, a major new initiative funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) will combine efforts from several organizations across the country to address the fight against cancer in Hispanic populations. Six regional centers are to be established across the United States, and Edward Trapido, Sc.D., associate director of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, chief of the Division of Cancer Control, and professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, has been selected to direct the Southeast Regional Network Center. Redes en AcciÛn will foster a national infrastructure for Hispanic cancer prevention and control activities, provide training and research opportunities for Hispanic students and researchers, and support cancer awareness activities in Hispanic communities.

UM CELEBRATES RECORD-BREAKING YEAR IN FUNDRAISING

UM received more than $100 million in donations for fiscal year 1999-2000, and over 68 percent of that total was generated from fundraising activities at the School of Medicine. This achievement marks the highest annual fundraising total in the University's 74-year history and the first time the University has broken the $100 million mark in annual contributions. TELE-CARE PROGRAM TAKES CARE OF CAREGIVERS

Understanding that caring for a loved one with a serious illness can be stressful to all those affected, the Schools of Nursing and Medicine have created the Tele-Care project. The program, made possible by a grant from the National Institute of Nursing Research, offers assistance to caregivers of persons who are seriously ill with cancer through regular telephone counseling. Tele-Care, available in English or Spanish, is offered once a week for 10 weeks from UM nurses and faculty. The School of Medicine, in conjunction with PE Biosystems, presents "New Technologies for Research and Diagnostic Laboratories," a DNA technology seminar, June 28, at 9 a.m. in the Mailman Center Auditorium. Paul Shapshak, Ph.D., research professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, will give the introduction, and representatives from PE Biosystems will conduct lectures and a question and answer session.
