UM MEDICAL STUDENTS SHINE AT
NATIONAL STUDENT RESEARCH FORUM

School of Medicine students received kudos at the recent National Student Research Forum in Galveston, Texas. Congratulations go out to Rashmi Lodha, a third-year student, who received the Dermatology Award; and Gary Danton, a student in the M.D./Ph.D. program, who was honored with the Mason Guest Memorial Award in Physiology and Biophysics. The forum attracts medical students from across the U.S. and Canada to present their research and compete for top honors.

DISCOVERY HEALTH CHANNEL SENDS OUT A
"LIFELINE" TO SCHOOL OF MEDICINE CENTERS

Discover the advances made right here at the School of Medicine with special episodes of the television series "Lifeline," on the Discovery Health Channel. The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis will be featured in a segment of the show to air on May 18 at 5 p.m., highlighting The Miami Project's search for a cure. Following that episode, another School of Medicine center will get national play, when the series follows scientists at the William Lehman Injury Research Center who study car crashes to make roads safer. This installment of "Lifeline" will air May 18 at 6 p.m.

DEADLINE FOR EMPLOYEE
SURVEY EXTENDED TO MAY 15

GO ON-LINE TO VIEW NEW WEB SITE
FOR BUSINESS AND SYSTEMS ANALYSIS

The Web Development Group has launched a new Web site for the Department of Business and Systems Analysis. View the revamped Web pages at http://industrialengineering.med.miami.edu. The site's visual enhancements are best viewed with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher, and they have been tested on both MAC and PC browsers, including Netscape 4 and 6, Internet Explorer 4 and 5 and Opera 5.

AVOID FEE FOR OUTPATIENT DIAGNOSTIC
TESTS THROUGH UM HEALTH CARE PLAN

Faculty and staff enrolled in the University of Miami health care plan who have outpatient diagnostic tests performed in hospital based facilities will incur a $50 co-payment. To avoid the $50 co-payment, faculty and staff may have an outpatient diagnostic test performed at a free standing diagnostic facility. For a list of free standing facilities designated by UnitedHealthcare in Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties, visit http://www.miami.edu/benefits/pdf/freestanding.pdf. These lists are accurate as of April 25, 2002 but are subject to change. At the time a service is needed, you must check with the provider to insure the provider is still listed as a free standing facility under the University of Miami health care plan. ARE TOPIC OF WEEKLY SEMINARS

A program of weekly small-group seminars on topics that pertain to the protection of human subjects in research continues May 14, with "Gene Therapy," presented by Ken Goodman, director of the UM Ethics Programs, noon to 1 p.m., at the Mailman Center, Room 3023. BLOOD BANKS CALL FOR DONATIONS

Give blood and give life at the upcoming School of Medicine Blood Drive, to be held May 15 and 16 in various locations around campus. Stations will be set up from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the UM/Sylvester courtyard, the Retter Walkway of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, and the Rosenstiel Building second floor student lounge on May 15. The student lounge location also will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 16. Donors also will receive a mini-physical, cholesterol test, blood typing, and a free t-shirt.

WALK YOUR WAY TO WELLNESS WITH
INSTITUTE FOR WOMEN'S HEALTH

In recognition of National Women's Health Week, the Institute for Women's Health will host a lunch-time Wellness Walk on May 16 to encourage health awareness among women. SAVE THE DATE FOR INTERDEPARTMENTAL
DISCUSSION OF SPIRITUALITY IN MEDICINE

Join the Behavioral Science Program of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, along with several other disciplines, for an Interdepartmental Academic Day to address "Spirituality and Medicine." A primary aim of this conference is to help physicians and other health care workers discuss and learn about the beneficial uses of spirituality in medical settings, such as pediatrics, ob/gyn, and addiction psychiatry. Robert Schwartz, M.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, and Carl Eisdorfer, Ph.D., M.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, will be among the members of a faculty panel that will address spirituality. The event will be held May 29, 8 a.m. to noon, in Jackson's Diagnostic Treatment Center, Room 270. No RSVP or registration fee is required, but please arrive early. RESEARCH AT THE MIAMI PROJECT

Swirl, sip, and swish for a good cause at a special wine tasting presented by The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. "Raise a Glass for a Cure" will be held May 31, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., to benefit the Miami Chapter of the Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis in support of ongoing research at the Miami Project. Tickets are $55 per person in advance, $65 at the door. The event will be held at the Miami City Club, 200 South Biscayne Boulevard, First Union Building, 55th Floor.
