UNIVERSITY PROVOST HONORS DR. ADAM WANNER WITH AWARD FOR SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY

Adam Wanner, M.D., professor in the Department of Medicine, was one of four University faculty members to receive the fourth annual Provost's Award for Scholarly Activity. Dr. Wanner was recognized for his research of asthma, including his development of the animal model of bronchial asthma that is used as the premier testing model for virtually all drugs currently marketed for the treatment of asthma. The award was created by UM executive vice president and provost Luis Glaser to honor extraordinary research and scholarly pursuits.

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE ANNOUNCES RON BOGUE AS NEW LEADER FOR FACILITIES AND SERVICES

Ron Bogue joins the medical school as assistant vice president for facilities and services, where he will oversee space planning initiatives, facilities management, security, mail services, and materials management. Bogue was most recently executive director of facilities management for the North Broward Hospital District. He is no stranger to the medical center, having served as administrator of engineering/construction services at Jackson Memorial Hospital. If you have questions about facilities and services at the School of Medicine, call 305-243-2840.

FINANCIAL POLICY B-35 HAS BEEN UPDATED

Financial Policy B-35, External Audits, has been revised to state that any financial audits or reviews performed by outside auditors must be arranged through the University Controller. Auditors include those engaged by UM as well as auditors from the federal, state or local government and/or other private organizations with the authority and responsibility to perform audits and reviews. The entire policy can be viewed online at http://www.miami.edu/CompSec/finance/finb035.htm.

PURCHASING ENFORCES CONTRACTING REQUIREMENTS FOR PURCHASE ORDER REQUESTS

When obtaining a purchase order, deviation from procedures will result in a delay. Contracts involving procurement are to be forwarded to the Purchasing Department along with an approved purchase requisition. Purchasing will follow the necessary process to ensure that contracts are forwarded to Business Services, attention Alan Fish, for signature. Departments are encouraged to initial contracts prior to forwarding them with a purchase requisition to the Purchasing Department. As referenced in University of Miami policies (see policy F005 Contracts/Agreements and policy J028 Contracting Requirements - Medical Campus) and the dean's March 15 memorandum, the only authorized signatories of University contracts are Alan Fish, associate vice president for business services, and/or his designees. Please contact Carmen Oliva via email at coliva@med.miami.edu or telephone at 305-243-3666 with any questions.

SIGNED CONSULTING AGREEMENTS REQUIRED BEFORE CONSULTANT BEGINS WORK FOR YOUR DEPARTMENT

University of Miami purchasing policies and procedures require a purchase order and a signed consulting agreement prior to a consultant beginning any work for the University. A high volume of consulting agreements are being forwarded to the medical Purchasing Department after the consultants' work is in progress. Consulting agreements and other contractual arrangements may require legal intervention in some cases. Difficulties arise in negotiations if the consulting work has already begun, without proper review of agreement by purchasing and legal departments. In addition, consultants must sometimes wait months to receive payment before the required documentation is forwarded to Purchasing. Submitting the required documentation beforehand helps to avoid such delays. Please contact Esther Lopez 243-5778 or Liana Morales 243-3662 with any questions.
