OPTHALMOLOGY ATLAS PUBLISHED AT BASCOM PALMER EYE INSTITUTE

The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the School of Medicine recently released the University of Miami Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Atlas of Ophthalmology, an extensive, full-color reference volume for ophthalmologists, fellows, residents, and students. Technique, diagnostics, and facts on various diseases are included in the atlas, which was created by current faculty as well as former residents and fellows. The atlas is sold at the UM Medical Bookstore for $195. Plans are in the works to release a CD-rom version of the book and to translate it into Spanish, German, French, and Italian. FAMILY PRACTICE RESIDENCY PROGRAM NAMES NEW DIRECTOR

Penny Tenzer, M.D., is the new director of the Family Practice Residency Program in the Department of Family Medicine & Community Health. Before joining the School of Medicine faculty, Dr. Tenzer was the program director of the MacNeal Family Practice Residency Program, affiliated with the University of Chicago. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Geriatrics. Dr. Tenzer regularly lectures at the national level on topics such as geriatrics and women's health. To contact Dr. Tenzer, call 305-243-2951. IT PAYS TO PARTICIPATE IN VAN POOL PROGRAM

Is driving to work every day getting you down? The South Florida Van Pool Program can help. Implemented in South Florida in 1998, UM employees living in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and Monroe counties now can take advantage of this cost-saving program. The program provides monthly county subsidies for groups of 7-15 as long as at least one member of the pool lives outside of Miami-Dade county. There is no long-term obligation and roadside assistance is available for participating groups. For details about this program, call 305-243-2321. MEDICAL EQUIPMENT TO BE AUCTIONED OFF THIS WEEK

Equipment formerly owned by a clinical diagnostics corporation will be auctioned off on February 9 and 10 at 10 a.m. at 1851 Delaware Parkway in Miami. Previews of the equipment will be held on February 7 and 8 from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Anyone interested in participating in the auction is encouraged to view the equipment online at http://www.advancedlink.com. The auction is presented by Advanced Asset Services, Inc. Please note that on-line bidding is not permitted. Interested participants must submit a purchase requisition by Monday, February 7, indicating the estimated total dollar amount to be spent. The requisition also will require proper internal approvals. The purchasing department will then issue a purchase order and contact the department submitting the requisition with the purchase order number. TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER OFFICE LAUNCHES NEW INVENTION PROGRAMS

The Office of Technology Transfer recently established the GAP Fund Program (GFP) and the Invention Recognition Program (IRP). The GFP offers seed money to early stage research with commercial potential, and the IRP offers money for all inventions resulting in patent applications between December 1999 and December 2000. UNIVERSITY ADVANCEMENT APPOINTS INTERIM ASSISTANT VICE PRESIDENT OF MEDICAL DEVELOPMENT

Jeff Newton has been appointed as the interim assistant vice president of Medical Development and Alumni Relations. He fills the position recently vacated by Helaine Ahern, who was responsible for great strides in medical development during her tenure at the School of Medicine. Ahern leaves the University this week to begin work at the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for Advancement of Military Medicine in Washington, D.C. Newton joins the medical school from the Coral Gables campus, where he served as the assistant vice president for development for the Coral Gables and marine science campuses.

MEDICAL CENTER UPDATE GETS A FACELIFT

Medical Center Update, the monthly newsletter of the School of Medicine, has been redsigned and now incorporates a cleaner, easier-to-read design. Two new departments also have been added to the newsletter, including "Word on the Street," a column that highlights employees' opinions on various issues, as well as "stat," which provides readers with useful facts and figures about health-related or campus-related statistics. Pick up the January/February issue today!

DEADLINE APPROACHES FOR HUMAN SUBJECTS CERTIFICATION SEMINARS

The final two seminars for human subjects research certification are March 13 at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Diagnostic Treatment Center, Room 259, and May 17 at the VA auditorium. Sign-in for both seminars will begin at 3:30 p.m., with each session running from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. All investigators who have not attended one of the first three seminars are required to attend one remaining session. Those who fail to attend will not be certified to continue performing current studies or initiate new studies that require approval by the Institutional Review Boards at UM or the VA. All those involved in human subjects research can attend. For a registration form, contact Mary Palmer at 305-243-2079. The registration deadline for the March seminar is March 6, and the registration deadline for the May seminar is May 8.

LEADERSHIP PROGRAM ENHANCES YOUR ABILITY TO RENDER SUPERIOR SERVICE

The Office of Professional Development is now accepting applications for the spring 2000 session of the Leadership Skills Development Program. The program, which runs for six consecutive Fridays, beginning February 25, features esteemed presenters on such topics as strategic planning, teamwork, managing change, and ethics, among others. Self-directed, participant-centered activities also are a part of the sessions. Some criteria for application include volunteer service, above-average ratings on performance appraisals, and your supervisor's endorsement.
