ANNIVERSARY ALBUM

Learn interesting facts about the School of Medicine’s history every two
weeks, as e-Update presents the latest in a special series commemorating our
50th anniversary.
In 1961 the Department of Medicine created a post-graduate refresher course
to help exiled Cuban physicians pass the examination for certification required
by the Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates. This effort helped
hundreds of Cuban doctors obtain their licenses to practice medicine and helped
a younger generation begin their post-graduate training. Dr. Rafael Penalver,
formerly of the University of Havana, directed the program, which eventually
became known as the Office of International Medical Education.
Later that same decade, the Harrington Medical Training Programs for Latin
America were created at the School of Medicine under the leadership of Dr. William
J. Harrington. Select physicians and students from Latin America traveled to
the medical school for training and returned home to improve medicine in their
countries. Over the years, the program has trained thousands of physicians from
Cuba and more than 60 other countries, including Vietnam and Cambodia.

WELLNESS FACILITY PLANNING AT THE
MEDICAL CENTER NEEDS YOUR INPUT
The School of Medicine is in the final stages of planning a state-of-the-art
Wellness Facility and Program designed specifically to meet the needs of the
medical center students, faculty, and employees at both UM and Jackson. Located
on the top floors of a new parking garage to be constructed near the Professional
Arts Center, the 60,000 square foot facility will feature weight training and
cardiovascular exercise equipment, a full range of fitness classes, and amenities
including private showers with towel service, lockers, and a specialized food
service to offer fresh juice, health shakes, nutritional sandwiches, and more.
The new wellness center is geared toward the needs of medical center employees,
so your opinions are most important. To ensure that the final program and facility
plans meet potential member needs and expectations, you may be asked to participate
in a telephone survey soon. This survey will take only a short time and will
be invaluable to those planning the facility. If you are called, your participation
is strongly encouraged.
CONTRIBUTIONS STILL ACCEPTED FOR
UNIVERSITY’S 2002 UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN
You can give thanks by giving back this Thanksgiving holiday through a contribution
to programs serving those less fortunate in the South Florida community. There
is still time to help our community by giving through the United Way to your
agency of choice. You can turn in your donation to your office’s United
Way ambassador, or you may contact Pat Grewe, manager of the School of Medicine
United Way campaign, at 305-243-6601.
BI-WEEKLY PAY SCHEDULE ALTERED TO
ACCOMMODATE UPCOMING HOLIDAYS
Employees who are paid on a bi-weekly basis should note the following holiday
changes to the pay schedule: Paychecks will be distributed on Wednesday, November
27, to account for the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, November 28. Likewise,
payday will fall on Monday, December 23, to account for the Christmas holiday.
Paydays for employees paid monthly will continue to occur on the last working

ENJOY A LONG THANKSGIVING WEEKEND
WITH UNIVERSITY HOLIDAY CLOSINGS
You’ll have plenty of time to rest and recover from turkey and all the
trimmings this weekend. Remember that the School of Medicine, along with the
entire University, will be closed on Thursday, November 28, and Friday, November
29, for the Thanksgiving holiday. Regular business will resume on Monday, December
2.
VISITING EXPERT TO DISCUSS LOCOMOTION
RECOVERY AT MIAMI PROJECT LECTURE SERIES
The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis presents the third installment in the 2002-2003
Gail F. Beach Memorial Visiting Lectureship Series. Serge Rossignol, M.D., Ph.D.,
director of the Research Centre in Neurological Sciences at the Université
de Montréal, will present “Recovery of Locomotion in Spinal Transected
Animals” on December 4, noon, at the James A. Batten Apex Center and Auditorium
on the seventh floor of the Lois Pope LIFE Center. Rossignol is a leader in
the study of the brainstem and spinal control of locomotion. For additional

FACULTY ASSOCIATION WELCOMES SPRING
WITH DINNER PARTY AT PRESIDENT’S HOME
Save the date on your calendar for the Medical Faculty Association’s Annual
Spring Dinner Party, scheduled for February 28. All faculty are invited, and
proceeds will benefit the association’s awards and scholarship programs.
This year’s event will be held at the home of UM President Donna E. Shalala.
