JAY WEISS: IN MEMORIAM
The University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center has lost one of its
best friends with the passing of Mr. Jay Weiss on Jan. 31. For those who
may not have had the privilege of knowing him personally, Jay Weiss was a
longtime champion of UM/JMH and the less fortunate of this community, our
Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and many other aspects of the School
Medicine. He was simply one of our greatest and most caring friends
In memory of all the many generous things he has done for us and the greater
Miami community, there will be a brief moment of remembrance at 10:30 today,
February 3. We ask each of you to please pause in your duties at 10:30 this
morning for 76 seconds, one for each year of Mr. Weiss’ life, to honor
the memory of this extraordinary man.
BASCOM PALMER OPENS NAPLES CENTER
Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Retina Center of Naples opened last Wednesday in
the Naples Community Hospital’s new medical plaza, a half mile north
of downtown Naples. The 3,000-square-foot center is equipped with the latest
diagnostic and treatment technology and is dedicated exclusively to the care
and management of retinal diseases and disorders, including macular degeneration

MIAMI PROJECT’S DESTINATION: FASHION

INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE CONFERENCE
“ Integrative Medicine: Collaboration, Co-Management and Advanced Protocols,” will

NEUROLOGICAL SURGERY GRAND ROUNDS

VISITING NEUROLOGY LECTURERS
Gilberto R. Gonzalez, M.D., Ph.D., director of Neuroradiology at Massachusetts
General Hospital and associate professor at Harvard Medical School, will
visit the neuroradiology section of the Department of Radiology next Thursday
and Friday, February 12 and 13. He will present two lectures; Thursday from
12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Radiology Conference Room, West Wing 279, on “MRS
of Neuro-inflammation and Neuro Degeneration,” and Friday in neuroscience
grand rounds in the Lois Pope LIFE Center seventh-floor auditorium, from
11 a.m. to noon, on “NeuroAIDS: Insights from Imaging and Primates.” All

GAIL F. BEACH MEMORIAL VISITING LECTURESHIP SERIES
Thomas M. Brushart, M.D., division chief of hand surgery at the Johns

BOOK SIGNING AT CALDER LIBRARY
The Louis Calder Memorial Library is hosting a book signing reception with
D. Ralph Millard, Jr., M.D., a world renowned plastic surgeon, Saturday,
February 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. on the third floor of Calder Library. This book
signing is presented by the D. Ralph Millard, M.D., Medical Society.
GERIATRICS TRAINING
The Miami Area Geriatric Education Center and the Miami VA Medical Center Geriatric
Research, Education, and Clinical Center will host the Intensive Geriatric
Training Nutrition Module on the next three Thursdays, February 5, 12, and
19, at the Miami Jewish Home and Hospital for the Aged at Douglas Gardens,
located at 5200 NE 2nd Avenue. The objective of these three sessions is to
increase the understanding of the physiological, biomedical, psychological,
economic and social factors that may contribute to changes in the nutritional
status and health of the elderly. The program offers 20 contact hours for
registered dietitians, registered dietetic technicians, and nutrition counselors.
Pre-registration is $155, with a reduced rate of $100 for UM/VA/JMH employees
and students, which includes conference materials, breakfast and lunch. For

TWO NEW WEBSITES LAUNCHED
The Web Development Group of the School of Medicine, in conjunction with the
Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, announces the launch of two new websites.
The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and the South Florida Spinal Cord
Injury Model System are both newly online. Both sites feature comprehensive

NEW PROTOCOL SUBMISSION FORMS
FOR HUMAN SUBJECTS RESEARCH
The Human Subjects Research Office has revised all forms for the submission
of protocols to the University’s Institutional Review Boards. Please

a preview of these forms in Adobe PDF format. Writable versions in Microsoft
Word will be available from our website on the effective date. For more information

“MIAMI LITE” WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM
The Diabetes Research Institute is starting a new session of “Miami Lite,” a
weight loss program for individuals with Type 2 diabetes. This program is open
to the public. It is designed to help participants with weight loss, nutrition,
controlling portion sizes, diabetes education, weight management techniques
and guidelines for exercise. Participants will meet every Thursday from 8 to
10 a.m. on the first floor of the DRI beginning February 19. This program lasts

TIME MANAGEMENT SEMINAR
The Employee Assistance Program, in conjunction with United HealthCare and
Optum, is pleased to bring you a lunchtime seminar on time management tomorrow
at noon. Participants will learn how to use values to set goals and priorities,
how to identify time wasters, time management principles, decision making
and time allocation techniques. The seminar will be held in the Professional
Development and Training Office, Room 139, Max Orovitz Building, on the Coral

REVASCULARIZATION SUMMIT
Registration is open for the Miami International Revascularization Summit this

UM/SYLVESTER DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES
Madhav Dhodapkar, M.D., head of the Laboratory of Tumor Immunology and assistant
professor at The Rockefeller University in New York, will present “Tumor-Immune
Interactions: Patients with Monoclonal Gammopathies,” in the UM/Sylvester
conference room 1301 on February 13 from noon to 1 p.m. This didactic lecture
series provides a forum for outstanding clinical and translational researchers
to interact with UM/Sylvester faculty. The focus of the series is to bring
basic science and clinical researchers together to discuss recent advances

TEACHING CONFERENCE ON HEART & STROKE
Register now for the 36th Annual Teaching Conference in Clinical Cardiology
and Neurology, February 13 to 15 at the Hyatt Regency Miami. The conference
is a primary care update presented by the Center for Research in Medical
Education focusing on needs in managed care, especially bedside skills training.
UM physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurses can register for
a reduced fee of $100 ($150 for UM physicians), and CME credit and nurse

MASTERS OF PSYCHIATRY CONFERENCE
The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, in conjunction with
the Florida Psychiatric Society, is sponsoring its sixth annual Masters of

LEADERSHIP SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
This program is limited to 30 participants, but those who enroll will be guided
to a greater understanding of leadership, quality, continuous improvement,
strategic planning, the team concept, managing change, diversity, creativity,
and ethics and values. The program features self-directed, participant-centered
activities and participants practice using these concepts. The program consists
of seven sessions, all from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., on March 12, 19, 26, and April
2, 7, 16 and 30. The deadline to apply is February 20. The ideal candidate
is a research professional (A06), administrative/professional (A01), or faculty
member, has worked at the University of Miami for at least one year and received
an above-average total rating on each performance appraisal, has demonstrated
a potential for leadership through volunteer service to the community or
the University of Miami and through continued study for professional development,

LEARN TO WRITE WINNING GRANTS
The Office of Research is sponsoring “Write Winning Grants” on
Thursday and Friday, March 4 and 5, at the JMH Diagnostic Treatment Center
room 259. Stephen W. Russell, founding and managing member of Grant Writers'
Seminars and Workshops, L.L.C., will conduct the sessions. Russell has received
grant support from the National Institutes of Health as a principal investigator
since the early 1970s including individual, group, center, and training grants.
Attendance at the seminar is limited and participants will be selected through
an application process. The cost to attend is $125 and payment by check, IDR,
