UM DOCTOR NAMED CHIEF OF RADIOLOGICAL SERVICES AT ANNE BATES LEACH EYE HOSPITAL
Brian J. Murphy, M.D., associate professor in the Department of Radiology and chief of the Division of Musculoskeletal Radiology, was appointed to the position of chief of radiology services at the Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital. Dr. Murphy has made significant contributions in radiology throughout his career and is well respected nationally. In his new position, Dr. Murphy will oversee all radiological services performed at the eye hospital. AAMC FACULTY DEMOGRAPHICS REPORT NOW AVAILABLE ON-LINE
The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) now offers the ?U.S. Medical School Faculty, 1999,? a report of answers to commonly asked demographic questions about American medical schools? faculty members, including gender, ethnicity, department, rank, degree, and specialty. UM FACULTY MEMBER PUBLISHES BOOK ON ETHICS AND TECHNOLOGY
Kenneth W. Goodman, Ph.D., director of the UM Forum for Bioethics and Philosophy, has published Ethics, Computing and Medical Informatics and the Transformation of Health Care, a book concerning technological advances and their place in the health care industry. In the book, Dr. Goodman states that when a new technology compels medical professionals, social, financial, and ethical issues are raised. ?The challenge is how to make the most of our new technology without making the least of our personal freedoms,? he said.
UM DOCTOR CITED IN HERALD ARTICLE ON THYROID DISORDERS
On February 10, The Miami Herald ran an article entitled ?Thyroid Check,? featuring statements from Armando Solis, M.D., assistant clinical professor in the Department of Family Medicine & Community Health and clinical site director of the UMCare-Miami Beach clinic. Dr. Solis spoke of the importance of testing women for an overactive or underactive thyroid. If these conditions go untreated, stated the article, they can lead to osteoporosis, infertility, and depression. MIAMI HERALD DISCUSSES THE BENEFITS OF COCHLEAR IMPLANTATION, AS PERFORMED AT UM
The success of cochlear implants and research presented at the recent VI International Cochlear Implant Conference were the subjects of an article in the February 10 edition of The Miami Herald, entitled ?Cochlear Implants: Deaf Children?s Link to the Hearing World.? Thomas Balkany, M.D., director of the Ear Institute, and Shelly Dolan-Ash, instructor in the Department of Otolaryngology, are quoted in the article, where they discuss the implantation of the device and the benefits it offers to children with hearing disabilities. UPCOMING PRESENTATIONS MARK A BIG WEEK FOR BIOETHICS AT THE MEDICAL SCHOOL
Topics in contemporary bioethics are up for discussion this week in both a
new program and a traditional UMSM activity. Ethics Grand Rounds will kick off
February 18 at 10 a.m. in the Mailman Center, 8th Floor Auditorium with the
topic "An Alternative to Assisted Suicide" presented by Professor
Bernard Gert, a Dartmouth College philosopher and one of the world's leading
scholars in health care ethics. Ethics Grand Rounds have been approved for continuing
education credits in a variety of disciplines. Professor Gert also will participate
in the monthly Dialogues in Research Ethics with a presentation titled "Temptations
in Gene Therapy Research." This talk is on February 18 at noon in Rosenstiel
6018 and will address issues related to the recent death of a healthy subject
on a gene therapy trial in Pennsylvania. A light lunch will be provided. For

PARTICIPATE IN AIDS WALK MIAMI
Join Team UM for AIDS Walk Miami on February 20. Students and employees of UM are invited to meet at the University Center patio, Coral Gables campus, at 3:15 p.m. on the day of the walk. The 5K walk originates at Bayfront Park, with registration beginning at 4:30 p.m. Opening ceremonies begin at 5 p.m. The walk ends on the Brickell Bridge with a candlelight march and concert. To participate in the walk, you must obtain a registration form and receive at least $25 in pledges (you can sponsor yourself). Pledge forms can be obtained at the Volunteer Services Center on the Coral Gables campus or at the UM table at Bayfront Park on the day of the walk.
