ANNIVERSARY ALBUM
**********************

Learn interesting facts about the School of Medicine’s history every two weeks, as e-Update presents the latest in a special series commemorating our 50th anniversary.

On August 30, 1982, Bernard J. Fogel, M.D., took the helm of the School of Medicine as UM President Edward T. “Tad” Foote II and the Board of Trustees named him vice president for medical affairs and dean. An alumnus of the School of Medicine, house officer, young faculty member, and part of the administration for almost 25 years, Fogel brought a unique perspective to the medical center. Prior to his appointment as dean, he served as co-director of the neonatal nursery and director of the Birth Deficit Center at Jackson, associate dean for curricular affairs, associate dean for medical education, admissions, and research, and assistant vice president for medical affairs. Fogel’s term as dean lasted more than 14 years until his retirement in 1995. He now is dean emeritus and is an important presence on the medical school campus.

Join Dean Emeritus Fogel and other leaders including John G. Clarkson, M.D., the School of Medicine’s current senior vice president for medical affairs and dean, and President Donna E. Shalala this Friday as they revisit these and other milestones in the medical school’s history at “50 Years and Beyond,” a historic symposium broadcast live beginning at 1:15 p.m. on the University’s Web site at http://www.med.miami.edu/50thanniversary/events.asp.
