HOSTS REACCREDITATION
COMMITTEE ON CAMPUS, BEGINNING TODAY
The Liaison Committee on Medical Education begins its site visit to the School
of Medicine today, Monday, February 18, continuing through Friday, February
22. The medical school will play host to the committee as it conducts its
evaluation of academic programs and initiatives in completing its review of
the School of Medicine's bid for reaccreditation.

SCHEDULING
ACCESS AND ON-CALL SERVICE STANDARDS
Access to ambulatory care appointment scheduling and on-call services are
on tap for this week's installment of the University of Miami Medical Group's
(UMMG) Professional Practice and Patient Access Standards. Rolling Six Month
Appointment Access: Each provider will have a minimum of six months of scheduling
available in the IDX scheduling system. On Call Schedules/Services: Each department
or division will provide a single telephone number to contact for on-call
attending services. This number will be readily available for all physicians
and staff. The on-call physician's response to callers will be made within
30 minutes. For questions on physician compliance with these standards, contact
Dr. Alan Livingstone at 305-585-1284. For staff compliance issues, contact

OFFICE CALLS FOR
APPLICANTS TO SCHOLARS PROGRAM IN AGING
The University of Miami is eligible to submit one proposal for the Ellison
Medical Foundation New Scholars Program in Aging for 2002, and qualified candidates
are called to apply through the School of Medicine's executive Office of Research
Leadership. Eligible candidates include new investigators with outstanding
promise in the basic biological or clinical sciences relevant to understanding
aging processes and age-related disease. As of March 15, the candidate must
hold a regular full time appointment (tenure or non-tenure) on the School
of Medicine faculty and must not have been in such an appointment for more

The Office of Technology Transfer announces the opportunity for School of
Medicine faculty to compete for a $100,000 grant from the Wallace H. Coulter
Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University.
Innovators who are investigating technological advances that may have practical
application to the quality of human life and health are called to apply for

SHORT-TERM RESEARCH
TRAINING
AVAILABLE FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS
The Department of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology has several short-term
research training positions funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood
Institute that will be available during the summer break for interested medical
students. A stipend of $3,765 per term will be distributed with the position,
and participants are encouraged to do two terms. Research will be conducted
in the lab of one of the training grant faculty members in pharmacology, physiology,
or cell biology. The opportunity is open to any current American medical student.

ANNOUNCES CHANGES
IN ACCOUNT CREATE FORMS AND PROCESS
The Office of the Controller has changed the account create forms used to
request new unrestricted, designated, restricted, plant, and agency accounts.
A social security number no longer is required and has been replaced by the
requirement of the UM identification number. To access blank copies of these

FOR OUTPATIENT DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES
Outpatient diagnostic services ñ tests conducted any time a patient
is not admitted to a hospital for treatment ñ can be rendered in hospitals,
as well as "free-standing" diagnostic facilities. Faculty and staff
who undergo outpatient diagnostic tests at the hospital facility setting will

VISITS MIAMI PROJECT FOR LECTURE SERIES
The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis presents Dr. Nobutaka Hirokawa of the
Tokyo School of Medicine, guest of the Gail F. Beach Memorial 2001-2002 Visiting
Lecture Series. Dr. Hirokawa's work with specific motor proteins has provided
important insights into the function of the nervous system. He will discuss
"Molecular Mechanism of Organelle Transport in Neurons: Kinesin Superfamily
Motor Proteins, KIFS, Key Molecules for Neuronal Function and Disease,"

The University of Miami will present the 28th annual Eastern-Atlantic Student
Research Forum (ESRF) on February 21 ñ 22, with displays stationed
throughout the medical center at the Lois Pope LIFE Center, Jackson's Diagnostic
Treatment Center, and the Rosenstiel Building. Students from the United States
and Canada will present their research in the clinical and basic sciences,
in addition to offering oral and poster presentations. Bruce Kraut, M.D.,
Ph.D., pediatrician and professor of classics at the University of Florida,
will present the keynote speech, entitled "Hippocratic Deontology."
Lawrence Fishman, M.D., associate chief of staff for research at the Miami
Veterans Affairs Medical Center, is the invited speaker for the Awards Banquet
to be held on February 22 at the Doubletree Grand Hotel on Biscayne Bay. If

The UM Ethics Programs offers the next installment of its Dialogues in Research
Ethics Series on February 22, noon, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center,
Room 207. "Privacy, Data Protection, and the Law," will be presented
by Anita Cava, J.D., co-director of the Ethics Programs; Mike Novo, J.D.,
assistant general counsel; and Reid Cushman, Ph.D.; who works with the Ethics
Programs' new Privacy and Data Protection Team. The speakers will address
issues of the new privacy protection law, in which investigators will be kept
to a nationwide standard, along with the researcher's responsibilities of

special version of the annual conference "Clinical Ethics: Debates, Decisions,
Solutions," on March 1 at the Sheraton Hotel at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood
International Airport. UM President Donna E. Shalala will present the keynote
address, discussing the new federal privacy and data protection law, which
was crafted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services during President
Shalala's tenure as HHS Secretary. Additional topics presented at the conference
will include end-of-life care, access to care, and issues in health law. A
Spanish language session also will be presented. Continuing education credits
