REVITALIZE MEDICAL CENTER NEIGHBORHOOD
Get the inside scoop on how the School of Medicine plays a role in the vitality
of its surrounding community when the Summer Student Program sponsored by EDAW,
an internationally-acclaimed architectural firm, presents “Successful

the School of Medicine, Jackson Memorial Hospital, the Civic Center, Highland
Park, and Allapattah. Come see the vision unfold for developing a neighborhood
that feels like home to residents, employees, and visitors alike. The final

ABCNEWS.COM FEATURES
DR. ARLETTE PERRY
ON HERBAL TREATMENTS FOR MENOPAUSE
A recent article on ABCNEWS.com examines the use of herbal treatments as an
alternative to hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for relief of menopause symptoms
and cites a UM doctor among its expert sources. Traditional hormone treatments
can sometimes cause bleeding, bloating, or even increase the risk of breast
cancer, leaving many women looking for other options. Arlette Perry, Ph.D.,
professor and chair of exercise and sports sciences, is lead investigator on
a UM study that looks at the benefits of some of those options, namely herbal
supplements kava kava and black kohosh, in easing mood swings and hot flashes
associated with menopause. She contributed to the abc.com article, which can
be found at http://www.abcnews.go.com/sections/living/DailyNews/menopause_herb020619.html.
