2004 GEORGE PAFF TEACHING AWARDS
The 2004 George Paff Teaching Awards, awarded each year by the School of Medicine

DEAN’S PATIENT SAFETY COLLOQUIUM WORKSHOP
Jonathan Wilwerding, M.P.A., Ph.D., will discuss “Risk Models and Medical
Errors Associated with Transitions of Care” at the Dean’s Patient
Safety Colloquium Workshop. Since 1997, Dr. Wilwerding has worked on issues
of labor economics and policy, international and domestic health economics and
policy and applied econometrics. He is currently an associate at Abt Associates,
one of the largest for-profit government and business research and consulting
firms in the world. He will be speaking to the University community tomorrow
in the second-floor auditorium at Jackson Memorial Hospital, central building,

VISION SCIENCE LECTURE
The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute hosts Ronald Harwerth, O.D., Ph.D., from the
University of Houston, presenting "Defective Vision from Glaucoma: Structure-Function
Relationships," in the Frontiers in Vision Science series, this Thursday
in the Retter Auditorium, second-floor, BPEI. The lecture is from 5:30 to 6:30
p.m., with a reception downstairs in the cafeteria beginning at 5. For more

2004 NEUROSCIENCE CENTER SEMINAR SERIES
Pat R. Levitt, Ph.D., director, Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Research
on Human Development at Vanderbilt University, will present "Converging
Evidence that Schizophrenia is a Disease of the Synapse" as part of the
2004 Neuroscience Center Seminar Series. This lecture series is sponsored by
the Neuroscience Center, the School of Medicine, and the Office of the Provost, and
will be held on Friday at 4 p.m. in the Lois Pope LIFE Center seventh-floor

UM/SYLVESTER DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES
Norman M. Greenberg, Ph.D., of the Clinical Research Division at the Fred
Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, will present: “Steroid
and Peptide Hormones and Prostate Cancer: A Transgenic Perspective,” in
the UM/Sylvester conference room 1301 on Friday from noon to 1 p.m. This didactic
lecture series provides a forum for outstanding clinical and translational
researchers to interact with UM/Sylvester faculty. The focus of the series
is to bring basic science and clinical researchers together to discuss recent
advances in the understanding and treatment of human cancer. Lunch will

ANNUAL BIOETHICS CONFERENCE
The University’s 12th annual spring bioethics conference will be held
this Friday and Saturday at the Wyndham Miami Beach Resort. In collaboration
with the Florida Bioethics Network, the American Society for Bioethics and the
Humanities, and the American Medical Informatics Association, the program will
feature a theme of ethics and health information technology, sessions on the
Schiavo case and plenary presentations by Dr. Carolyn Clancy, director of the
Federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and Dr. John Agwunobi, Florida's
secretary of health. A comprehensive array of CMEs and CEUs is available.
There is no charge for full-time University staff, but staff must pre-register

HUMAN SUBJECTS RESEARCH SEMINAR
The Human Subjects Research Seminar for April will feature Roberto
Dominguez, M.D., of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr.
Dominguez will discuss “The Therapeutic Misconception.” The
seminar will be held on Tuesday, April 27, at the Mailman Center,
room 3023, from noon to 1 pm. Advance registration is required as

WOMEN IN MEDICINE DAY
Former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno will be the special guest speaker
at Women in Medicine Day on April 24. Presented by The Miami Medical Women’s
Association, Mount Sinai Medical Center, and UM/JMH Institute for Women’s
Health, the event will take place at 10 a.m. at the Miami Heart Institute,
4701 N. Meridian Ave, Miami Beach. Lunch will be provided. Tickets for the
event are $25 for faculty and physicians; $15 for students and staff. For more

REHABILITATION MEDICINE GRAND ROUNDS
Fernando Branco, M.D., assistant professor of clinical rehabilitation medicine
in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, will speak on “Exercise
and Aging” on Friday, April 30 from 8 to 9 a.m. at the Jackson Rehabilitation
Center third-floor auditorium. Dr. Branco will provide an introduction to exercise
physiology and discuss exercise testing, evaluation, physiological parameters,
prescriptions and indications of exercise in relation to aging. No RSVP is

FINDING PEACE WITH STRESS
The Employee Assistance Program is offering a relaxing seminar called “Finding
Peace with Stress.” Participants will learn to address the factors that
influence their own levels of stress, and to practice effective stress management
techniques. Free relaxation CDs will be given to the first 30 participants.

FREE ORAL, HEAD AND NECK CANCER SCREENINGS
In recognition of Yul Brynner’s Head and Neck Research Foundation’s
Oral, Head And Neck Cancer Awareness Week (April 19th –25th), the Sylvester
Comprehensive Cancer Center is offering free screenings to detect cancers of
the mouth, throat, thyroid, and other areas of the head and neck on Thursday,
April 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Radiation/Oncology Head & Neck
Clinic at UM/Sylvester. Early detection, via this quick and painless screening
exam, can save your life. The screening is free, but space is limited. Call

PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE LECTURE SERIES FEATURES MAYA ANGELOU
American poet/author Maya Angelou will speak at the UM Convocation Center
on Tuesday, April 27 at 7 p.m. as part of the Presidential Debate Lecture Series.
The event is free for faculty and staff, but you must have a ticket to enter.
Please bring your 'Cane Card to the Department of Minority Student Affairs
in the Rosenstiel Medical Science Building, room 2010 (phone number: 305-243-5998),
to pick up your ticket. Graduating students do not need to pick up a
ticket—you will receive your ticket at the Graduate Reception.
IDX OPEN REFERRALS TRAINING
The Office of Business Information Management Systems announces IDX open referral
training sessions, designed to train employees who enter appointments or referrals
into the IDX system. Training is mandatory for all employees who schedule appointments
and/or enter referrals. This training will allow the employee to understand,
create, and edit referrals, and link referrals to the appointment scheduling
section. There are multiple dates and sessions available. Please print out

TO DR. MYRON D. GINSBERG
Myron D. Ginsberg, M.D., of the Department of Neurology, will be presented
with this year’s Faculty Senate Distinguished Faculty Scholar award on
Friday, April 30, at 3 p.m. in the Storer Auditorium, School of Business Administration.
At the award ceremony, Dr. Ginsberg will also present "Preventing Brain

Barbara Resnick, Ph.D., CRNP, FAAN, associate professor in the Department
of Adult Health at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, will discuss "Innovative
Strategies to Motivating Older Adults to Engage in Health Behaviors" as
part of The Center on Aging’s Distinguished Lecture Series on April 29
at noon in the Hurricane Room 100, Convocation Center, 1245 Walsh Avenue. Dr.
Resnick is nationally known for her work in motivating older adults to achieve
their highest functional level, maintain their health and overall quality of

NIH REGIONAL SEMINAR ON PROGRAM FUNDING AND GRANTS ADMINISTRATION
The Office of Extramural Research sponsors semi-annual regional seminars on
program funding and grants, May 5 to 7 at the Wyndham Miami Beach Resort. These
seminars are intended to help demystify the application and review process,
clarify federal regulations and policies, and highlight current areas of special
interest or concern. The seminars are appropriate for grant administrators,
researchers new to NIH, and graduate students. Computer labs will be offered
in conjunction with the 2004 regional seminars; however, space is limited. For

ZUBROD MEMORIAL LECTURE, UM/SYLVESTER RESEARCH POSTER SESSION
Carlos L. Arteaga, M.D., professor of medicine and cancer biology and director
of the Breast Cancer Research Program and SPORE at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Comprehensive
Cancer Center, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, will deliver this
year’s Zubrod Memorial Lecture on June 3 at noon in the second floor
of the Jackson Memorial Hospital Diagnostic Treatment Center. Dr. Arteaga will
discuss “From Sarcoma Growth Factor to TGF-beta Targeted Therapies in
Human Neoplasia.” The event will also feature the announcement of UM/Sylvester’s

MEDICAL EDUCATION GRAND ROUNDS
Helen MacRae, M.D., the D.H. Gales Director of the Surgical Skills Centre
at the University of Toronto, will be the guest speaker at Medical Education
Grand Rounds on Friday, May 28, at noon in the Rosenstiel Medical Science Building,
fifth floor. Lunch will be served. The title of Dr. MacRae’s presentation
is “Technical Skills Labs: Flight Simulators of the Future?” Dr.
MacRae will explore the research in technical skills acquisition, help participants
understand how technical skills laboratories are being used to enhance skills
acquisition in undergraduate and post-graduate education, and discuss how a
skills lab curriculum can be implemented in a residency program. For more information,
