GOVERNOR BUSH LEADS ROUNDTABLE
DISCUSSION ON MEDICAL MALPRACTICE
Governor Jeb Bush visited the School of Medicine yesterday morning to discuss
the medical malpractice crisis in Florida. Introduced by Dean John G. Clarkson,
the governor fielded questions and welcomed suggestions from UM medical students
and Jackson residents. Topics discussed included a cap on non-economic damages,
providing incentives to keep practicing physicians from leaving Florida, and
patients’ access to care. The event, which was held at the Lois Pope LIFE
Center, has been archived on the school’s Web site and may be viewed at

UM/SYLVESTER OUTSTANDING CANCER
RESEARCH AWARDS ANNOUNCED
Congratulations to the following winners of the annual UM/Sylvester Awards for
Outstanding Cancer Research: Mendi Nassari, M.D., and Rima Kanhoush, M.D., received
first and second place, respectively, in the fellows competition. Isabel Chu,
Ph.D., won first place in the graduate student/postdoc categpry, while Hyun-Mi
Cho, Ph.D., earned second place. Finally, Darren Bruck, M.D., topped the resident/medical
student competition, and Deborah Chong, M.D., was awarded second place honors.
CDC BROADCAST ON SARS
ARCHIVED AT CALDER LIBRARY
A recent update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention regarding
public health community preparedness for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome,
commonly known as SARS, will available after Thursday, June 12, in the Interdepartmental
Loan Department of the Calder Medical Library. For more information, contact

ANNUAL HUBERT ROSOMOFF RESEARCH
DAY OFFERS VARIETY OF PRESENTATIONS
The Comprehensive Pain and Rehabilitation Center will honor longtime leader
Hubert Rosomoff, M.D., at the third annual Hubert Rosomoff Research Day, featuring
presentations from the Department of Neurological Surgery. The event will be
held this Saturday, June 14, at the Lois Pope LIFE Center, seventh floor auditorium,
and will include lectures on topics such as the effects of age following spinal
cord injury, therapeutic hypothermia, and pediatric brain tumors, among others.

JOIN NEUROAIDS JOURNAL CLUB
FOR FIRST MEETING NEXT WEEK
The first meeting of the medical school’s new NeuroAIDS Journal Club will
be held June 17, 5 p.m., in the Mental Health Building, Room 3100. The group
will meet monthly and will feature presentations on clinical and research issues.
Ashok Verma, M.D., associate professor of neurology, and Paul Shapshak, Ph.D.,
research professor of psychiatry, will present articles at the first meeting.

SERIES TO BENEFIT UM/SYLVESTER
The Cellar Club of the Biltmore Hotel presents the Nostalgia Concert Series,
with proceeds to benefit the UM/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Sponsored
by Southern Wine & Spirits, the concert series will be held June 12 –
16, featuring Leon Russell (June 12), The Turtles featuring Flo and Eddie (June
13), 5th Dimension (June 14), The Little River Band (June 15), and Rita Coolidge
(June 16). All shows begin at 9:30 p.m. and will be presented “nightclub
style” with limited seating in the Biltmore Hotel's Country Club Ballroom.
Tickets to each performance are $75 for preferred seating, $65 for general seating,

Bascom Palmer Eye Institute presents the Robert Haimovici Lecture for residents,
fellows, faculty, and alumni of the Department of Ophthalmology, as well as
community ophthalmologists. J. Donald M. Gass, M.D., professor of ophthalmology
at Vanderbilt University, will present “Superficial Retinal Hemorrhage
in Patients with Macular Drusen: An Early Sign of Occult Chorioretinal Neovascularization
and Chorioretinal Vascular Anastomosis” on June 19, 6:30 p.m., in the

The Human Subjects Research Seminar for June will feature Jeffrey Brosco, M.D.,
associate professor of pediatrics with an adjunct appointment in the Department
of History. He will present “Human Subjects from a Historical Perspective.”

LEARN TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM VIOLENT
CRIME AT WOMEN’S SELF-DEFENSE COURSE
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, three out of four women will be
the victims of violent crime during their lifetime. Sign up now for the S.A.F.E.
National Self-Defense Institute Program and learn the skills to protect yourself.
The course will be held July 1, noon to 1:30 p.m., and will teach you how to
reduce your risk, avoid dangerous situations, and use simple strategies that
can help you avoid being attacked. You also will learn techniques to save yourself
if you do become a victim. The registration fee is $5 and the deadline for registration
