DR. QUENCER NAMED TO FIRST-EVER ENDOWED CHAIR IN RADIOLOGY AT UM

Robert Quencer, M.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Radiology, was granted the first-ever endowed chair in radiology at the School of Medicine. John G. Clarkson, M.D., senior vice president for medical affairs and dean of the School of Medicine, installed Dr. Quencer as the first recipient of the Robert Shapiro Chair in Radiology at a ceremony on June 17. The endowed chair was funded by Marc and Terri Shapiro to honor the memory of Marc's father, the late Robert Shapiro, M.D., professor in the Department of Radiology from 1984 until 1992. This chair is one of just a handful of endowed chairs in radiology in the country.

TOWN MEETING DISCUSSES HUMAN GENOME PROJECT, WHAT IT MEANS TO SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

John G. Clarkson, M.D., senior vice president for medical affairs and dean, called a special town meeting last Wednesday, June 28, to discuss the Human Genome Project and its impact on the medical center. R. UMSM FACULTY QUOTED IN HERALD ARTICLES ABOUT GENOME PROJECT

Two articles in the Miami Herald last week mirrored the medical community's enthusiastic response to the completion of the Human Genome Project, and many UM doctors were cited in the newspaper. Rodney Howell, M.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Pediatrics and president of the American College of Medical Genetics. A second article, "UM Scientists Use Genetics in their Work," detailed current genetics projects at the School of Medicine, including work at the DNA Microarray Facility, directed by Richard Bookman, Ph.D., associate dean for graduate studies and director of the M.D./Ph.D. Combined Degree Program.
