END-OF-LIFE CARE TRAINING
OFFERED AT UM/SYLVESTER
Victoria Bustamante, Psy. D., and Rev. Gary Bennett, B.S., of the Courtelis
Center for Research and Treatment in Psychosocial Oncology at UM/Sylvester
Comprehensive Cancer Center, will give a lecture on grief and bereavement at
the end of life in the SCCC 1301 conference room at noon today. The lecture
is for health care professionals only and lunch will be provided. To register

‘CANES KICKOFF PEP RALLY
Come help the ‘Canes kick off the 2003 football season after work this
Thursday, August 21, at Sunset Place. A pep rally for any and all Miami Hurricane
fans starts at 6 p.m., featuring players, coaches, the Band of the Hour, UM
cheerleaders, and of course Sebastian the Ibis. We’ll even have games
and prizes for fans in the crowd! Sunset Place is at U.S. 1 and Sunset Drive,
which is SW 72nd Street.
TOWN MEETING ON SKIN CANCER
The Oncology Data Center, a collaboration between Jackson Memorial Hospital
and UM/Sylvester, is hosting a town meeting to discuss skin cancer this Friday,
August 22. The discussion is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Diagnostic
Treatment Center, above the JMH cafeteria, and will offer CME credits to
qualified medical personnel. On the agenda: discussions about melanoma, current
standards of care, the role of radiation oncology, and more. For more information

HUMAN SUBJECTS RESEARCH AND PATIENT PRIVACY
The Human Subjects Research Seminar for August focuses on Research HIPAA Requirements,
from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26. Maria Arnold, director of the
Human Subjects Research Office, will lecture on the changes in research since
new patient privacy rules took effect in April. The seminar will meet in
room 3023 of the Mailman Center. Advance registration is required, by e-mail,

LEADERSHIP SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
The Professional Development and Training Office will offer an intense seven-week
program this fall to a select group of researchers and administrators. The
program will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Friday beginning October 10.
Participants will be exposed to seminars on continuous improvement, leadership,
quality, strategic planning, and much more, and only 30 employees may take
part. While the first class isn’t until October, the deadline to apply
is next Friday, August 29. To learn whether you qualify or to get an application,

supervisor.
CALL FOR PAPERS ON ANXIETY DISORDERS
The Anxiety Disorders Association of America is announcing a call for papers
in advance of its national conference in Miami this spring. The 24th Annual
Conference of the ADAA will be held March 11 to 14, 2004, at the Hyatt Regency
in downtown Miami. The deadline for submitting individual and group presentations
is September 5, and submissions of new research posters are due November

ATTENTION UM PARENTS!
Talk about problems… and solutions! S.T.E.P. (Systematic Training
for Effective Parenting) is an 8-week discussion group which offers parents
of children ages 7-12 a realistic and practical approach to meeting the challenges
of raising kids today. It teaches effective and enjoyable ways to communicate
with kids and helps parents reach their ultimate goal: raising children into
responsible men and women, capable of living meaningful, happy adult lives.
The course meets from noon to 1 p.m. on consecutive Tuesdays beginning next
week, August 26, in the McKnight Vision Research Building fifth-floor conference
room (Room 520). The classes are also offered at the same times on the Coral

HEALTH RESEARCH ETHICS CONFERENCE
Gail Shor-Posner, Ph.D., and Kenneth Goodman, Ph.D., will lead a two-day seminar
entitled Health Research Ethics in the Americas on September 12 and 13 in
the seventh-floor auditorium of the Lois Pope LIFE Center. The conference
will focus on the principles, values, and complications of international

TYPE 2 DIABETES SEMINAR TO FOCUS ON BASAL/BOLUS INSULIN THERAPY
Faculty and staff of the University of Miami School of Medicine and Jackson
Memorial Medical Center will lead a program called Practical Tools for Glycemic
Control in Type 2 Diabetes: Basal/Bolus Insulin Therapy on Saturday, September
20, in Orlando. Presenters will focus on practical tools for glycemic control.
The program runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Westin Grand Bohemian Hotel.
