SUPPORT CANCER RESEARCH NEWS CONFERENCE
This morning at 10:30 a.m. the American Cancer Society will hold a news conference
calling for an increase in NIH funding for cancer research. W. Jarrard Goodwin,
M.D., the director of UM/Sylvester, is scheduled to speak and University
employees are invited to attend to show their support. The news conference
will be held on the steps of the American Cancer Society Winn Dixie Hope
Lodge, across the courtyard from UM/Sylvester.
SPONSORED RESEARCH MANDATORY TRAINING
Investigators involved in any sponsored research at the University of Miami
will be required to pass a certification program in the coming months. The
program will be divided into five sessions held over a two-and-a-half day
period and will include training on everything from submitting proposals
to closing out an investigation. This training will be required for faculty
investigators and all non-faculty personnel who originate, review, reconcile,
or approve any phase of a sponsored grant or contract document, including
proposals, awards, and transactions. Currently only non-faculty personnel
can register for the course, which begins Tuesday, September 2. To register,

Select “Online Catalog” at the top of the left column, then “Alphabetical
Course Listing” in the left column, then choose “Sn” from
the alphabetical listing, and view the course details. To sign up, click
on “Register Here!” in the left column – be sure to choose
five sequential dates. Watch for notification about when faculty members

TWO NEW WEBSITES NOW IN SERVICE
The University Web Development Group is proud to announce the launch of two
new medical school sites. The Department of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences
is now operating a site for its Center for Complementary and Integrative
Medicine: http://www.med.miami.edu/psychiatry/cam/.
The mission of this site is to help people find healthy mind/body solutions
to health concerns. The other new web venue is the online home to the Department
of Pathology, at http://pathology.med.miami.edu.
(This site allows pathology to move from an independent website to one operated
by the Web Development Group’s infrastructure, with support from Medical
IT.)
HUMAN SUBJECTS RESEARCH AND PATIENT PRIVACY
The Human Subjects Research Seminar for August focuses on Research HIPAA Requirements,
from noon to 1 p.m. today, August 26. Maria Arnold, director of the Human
Subjects Research Office, will lecture on the changes in research since new
patient privacy rules took effect in April. The seminar will meet in room
3023 of the Mailman Center. Advance registration is required, by e-mail,

LEADERSHIP SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
The Professional Development and Training Office will offer an intense seven-week
program this fall to a select group of researchers and administrators. The
program will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Friday beginning October 10.
Participants will be exposed to seminars on continuous improvement, leadership,
quality, strategic planning, and much more, and only 30 employees may take
part. While the first class isn’t until October, the deadline to apply
is this Friday, August 29. To learn whether you qualify or to get an application,

supervisor.
CALL FOR PAPERS ON ANXIETY DISORDERS
The Anxiety Disorders Association of America is announcing a call for papers
in advance of its national conference in Miami this spring. The 24th Annual
Conference of the ADAA will be held March 11 to 14, 2004, at the Hyatt Regency
in downtown Miami. The deadline for submitting individual and group presentations
is September 5, and submissions of new research posters are due November

ATTENTION UM PARENTS!
Talk about problems… and solutions! S.T.E.P. (Systematic Training
for Effective Parenting) is an 8-week discussion group which offers parents
of children ages 7-12 a realistic and practical approach to meeting the challenges
of raising kids today. It teaches effective and enjoyable ways to communicate
with kids and helps parents reach their ultimate goal: raising children into
responsible men and women, capable of living meaningful, happy adult lives.
The course meets from noon to 1 p.m. on consecutive Tuesdays beginning today,
August 26, in the McKnight Vision Research Building fifth-floor conference
room (Room 520). The classes are also offered at the same times on the Coral

‘CANES SERVE UP VOLLEYBALL THIS FRIDAY
The University of Miami women’s volleyball team jumps into a new season
this Friday, August 29, at the Knight Sports Complex on San Amaro Drive. UM
hosts Manhattan College beginning at 7 p.m. to start a three game home stand.
Kent State faces off with the ‘Canes at noon Saturday, with the Indiana
Hoosiers wrapping things up in a 7 p.m. nightcap. UM is ranked 26th in the
nation in the NCAA coaches’ preseason poll. Come support your ‘Canes.
OFFER YOUR PREFERENCE FOR RAPE
SELF-DEFENSE COURSE COMING THIS FALL
The Security Department and Wellness Facility are planning a course on self-defense
for women at the School of Medicine this fall and need your feedback. The R.A.D.
(Rape Aggression Defense) Program focuses on awareness, risk reduction, and
practical physical defense techniques. The program costs $35 and consists of
12 hours of instruction that includes risk reduction and awareness strategies,
practical physical defense techniques, supervised simulations of attack scenarios,
and group discussion. Your preference of class time will determine when the
course will be offered. Please choose one of the following offered times and
provide your feedback to lfernand@med.miami.edu:
Tuesdays and Thursdays, four classes over two weeks, 4 to 7 p.m.; Tuesdays
and Thursdays, four classes over two weeks, 5 to 8 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays,
six classes over two weeks, 4 to 6 p.m.; or Saturdays, three classes over three
weeks, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

entitled Health Research Ethics in the Americas on September 12 and 13 in
the seventh-floor auditorium of the Lois Pope LIFE Center. The conference
will focus on the principles, values, and complications of international

TYPE 2 DIABETES SEMINAR TO FOCUS ON BASAL/BOLUS INSULIN THERAPY
Faculty and staff of the University of Miami School of Medicine and Jackson
Memorial Medical Center will lead a program called Practical Tools for Glycemic
Control in Type 2 Diabetes: Basal/Bolus Insulin Therapy on Saturday, September
20, in Orlando. Presenters will focus on practical tools for glycemic control.
The program runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Westin Grand Bohemian Hotel.

The UM Department of Neurology and the Kessenich Family MDA ALS Center have
arranged for an elegant three-day family cruise on the Carnival Spirit to raise
money for research into Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis – Lou Gehrig’s
Disease. The ship departs on December 6th with more than 100 families aboard.
