UM PSYCHIATRIST RECEIVES NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR FAMILY THERAPY RESEARCH

Howard Liddle, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and director of the Center for Treatment Research on Adolescent Drug Abuse, was honored at the Florida Association for Marriage and Family Therapy's Silver Anniversary Meeting on May 26. He received the Excellence in Family Therapy Award for his program of research on adolescent substance abuse. Dr. Liddle's therapy approach also was chosen for nationwide dissemination in the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention and the "Strengthening America's Families" project of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

MEDICAL SCHOOL GRADUATE TO BE FEATURED ON PRIME TIME CBS PROGRAM

CBS's "48 Hours" will air a story on June 15, entitled "Living Better, Longer," featuring 1997 School of Medicine graduate, Linda Bach, M.D., now a third year resident at Jackson Memorial Hospital. The segment will cover a day in the life of this remarkable woman, who, in her mid-forties, decided to go to medical school. Now in her fifties, Dr. Bach is near the end of her residency and ready to embark on a career in private practice. Lawrence Gardner, M.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Medicine, and Mark Gelbard, M.D., associate professor in the Department of Medicine, will make cameo appearances.

HERALD ARTICLE ADDRESSES OSTEOPOROSIS AND ITS PREVENTION THROUGH HEALTHY LIVING

Silvina Levis, M.D., associate professor in the Department of Medicine and director of the UM Osteoporosis Center, is featured in a June 8 article in the Miami Herald, entitled "Boning Up on Osteoporosis." The story discusses prevention and treatment of the disease, once thought to be an unavoidable consequence of aging. Recent research shows that taking calcium supplements and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help prevent osteoporosis. EMPLOYEES RECEIVE 20 PERCENT DISCOUNT AT BASCOM PALMER'S VISION CORRECTION CENTER

The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute offers a 20 percent discount on services at the Vision Correction Center for all University of Miami and Jackson Memorial Hospital employees. The discount also extends to include immediate family members living in the same household. The Vision Correction Center is located on the third floor of the Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital. UM/SYLVESTER TO HONOR FORMER DIRECTOR AT FIRST ANNUAL ZUBROD MEMORIAL LECTURESHIP

UM/Sylvester presents the 2000 Cancer Research Poster Competition and First Annual Zubrod Memorial Lectureship to honor the late Charles Zubrod, M.D., a pioneer in the use of chemotherapy and former director of UM/Sylvester, June 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the second floor conference center of Jackson's Diagnostic Treatment Center. Steven Rosenberg, M.D., Ph.D., of the National Cancer Institute, will be the guest speaker. There also will be a presentation honoring Alfred Ketcham, M.D., a former UM faculty member and one of the country's leading surgical oncologists.
