NATIONAL OSTEOPOROSIS MONTH EMPHASIZES SCREENING AND PREVENTION
May is National Osteoporosis Month, sponsored by the National Osteoporosis Foundation, with the objective to educate the public about this debilitating disease. Contrary to popular belief, osteoporosis is preventable if an individual lives a healthy lifestyle, meaning exercise, no smoking, and minimal alcohol use. The Osteoporosis Center at UM (in collaboration with the VA) is a source for educational material, screenings, and treatment. For more information on this disease and services offered at the medical center, pick up the May copy of Medical Center Update.

UM DOCTOR JOINS DISCUSSION OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ISSUES AT PRESS CONFERENCE
Karen Simmons, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and director of the Jackson Memorial Hospital Rape Treatment Center, spoke at a domestic violence awareness rally, "Stop the Violence Now," held on April 25 at the Stephen P. Clark Center in downtown Miami. The gathering aimed to promote public awareness of the issue. Dr. Simmons is the chair of the Miami-Dade Domestic Violence Oversight Board, which advises the county's commission and plans to build six emergency shelters for victims of domestic violence. She spoke on general domestic violence issues and sexual abuse during the rally's press conference. A similar rally is planned for the future. Keep an eye out for that date in e-Update's calendar listings.
