U.S. SECRETARY OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES DONNA SHALALA NAMED UNIVERSITY'S NEXT PRESIDENT

This weekend, the University of Miami Board of Trustees appointed U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna E. Shalala to succeed Edward T. CONTRIBUTE YOUR OPINION ON POTENTIAL CREATION OF IMAGING CORE SUPPORT FACILITY

The School of Medicine is exploring the establishment of an Imaging Core Facility to support research studies in molecular biology. Examples of instruments to be included are confocal microscopy, laser-scanning cytometry, laser capture microdissection, cell sorters, analytic flow cytometry, and electron microscopy. If you have instruments of this type or others that could be included please contact the Department of Research at naltman@miami.edu. Faculty comments about the need, utilization, and support for such a resource are welcome.

NEW EMPLOYEES DEALING WITH BLOOD MUST ATTEND REQUIRED TRAINING

To comply with OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, all employees whose job duties involve contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials; employees who are required to perform first aid, e.g. security personnel, police officers, divers; as well as plumbers in healthcare facilities must attend "Bloodborne Pathogens Training" at the time of hire and annually thereafter, and also must complete the Hepatitis B form. MIAMI HERALD SPOTLIGHTS UM/JMH BURN CENTER IN RECENT ARTICLE

The University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center Burn Center was featured in a recent Miami Herald article, entitled "Surviving a Burn." Nicholas Namias, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Surgery and co-director of the Burn Center, and Gil Ward, M.D., professor in the Department of Surgery and director of the Burn Center, discussed current research underway to find new procedures to cover damaged tissue, fight infection, and promote healing. BUY GREAT ART FOR A GREAT CAUSE AT PROJECT MEDISHARE ART AUCTION

The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health invites you to the annual Auction of Haitian Art, Thursday, November 30, at the Lowe Art Museum on the University's Coral Gables campus. All proceeds from this event will benefit Project Medishare, a School of Medicine student organization that travels to Haiti to provide much needed health care. A cocktail hour will run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and the auction will begin at 7:30 p.m.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST STARTS UM'S FIRST BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE ROTATION FOR FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENTS

Family medicine residents at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center can now participate in a behavioral science rotation offered by Heidi Stanley, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine & Community Health. This course is the first of its kind at the School of Medicine and was developed in response to family medicine's emphasis on psychosocial and biologic aspects of health and illness. Dr. Stanley also developed a list serve for the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine/Group on Behavioral Science to facilitate dialogue and collaboration among behavioral scientists and physicians across the country.

STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY REMOVES SKIN IMPERFECTIONS AT MOHS LASER CENTER

The Mohs Laser Center at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center offers a variety of laser treatments using the latest technology, including a specialized laser to permanently remove unwanted hair using a cooling spray that protects the skin (especially safe for darker skin types). The Ultra Pulse CO2 laser treats wrinkles and other fine facial lines, as well as certain types of birthmarks; the Pulsed Dye-Laser treats broken blood vessels, facial veins, vascular birthmarks, scars, and keloids; and the Derm Lasers treat skin pigmentation problems such as freckles, birthmarks, and tattoos. ETHICS SEMINAR TO DISCUSS ISSUES AND TRENDS IN END-OF-LIFE CARE

The Jackson Memorial Bioethics Committee presents "Meeting the Challenges of End of Life Care," December 1, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Jackson's Diagnostic Treatment Center, room A259. This day-long seminar will address advances in the fields of palliative medicine and end-of-life care, emphasizing multidisciplinary management issues. Discussions will include legal issues, complementary medicine, and pain assessment, among others. Continuing education credits will be provided. STUDENT RESEARCH FORUM CALLS FOR ABSTRACTS FOR UPCOMING CONFERENCE

The Eastern Atlantic Student Research Forum is an annual symposium featuring oral and poster presentations in the clinical and basic sciences, prominent guest lecturers, social events, and an awards banquet. The event is not scheduled until February 21 ñ 23, but abstracts are now being accepted for presentations. The deadline for submission of abstracts is December 18.
