OPEN ENROLLMENT IS 10/22 THROUGH 11/2.  ARE YOU READY? DO YOU HAVE YOUR PIN?

Benefits Administration is holding the first on-line, paperless open enrollment this year from October 22 through November 11. To review or make changes to your existing medical or dental benefits, pre-tax deductions, or non-smoking certifications--or to enroll in Flexible Spending Accounts for 2002--you can access "Your Benefits Link," the on-line enrollment system, at http://www.benefits.miami.edu. You will need a PIN to access the system. This PIN is the same number you use to access the University's EASY system. If you do not have a PIN, you can assign one by visiting http://benefits.miami.edu. You will need the net pay amount from your most recent paycheck to verify your identity when assigning yourself a PIN.

DEADLINE APPROACHES FOR INSTRUCTORS TO SUBMIT JANUARY 2002 TEXTBOOK ADOPTIONS

The Medical Bookstore now is accepting textbook adoptions from School of Medicine instructors for classes beginning in January 2002. The deadline for submitting orders of textbooks you will need for Spring 2002 courses is October 19. Medical faculty members will receive blank adoption forms in their mailboxes, and the forms also can be picked up at the bookstore or the Office of Medical Curriculum. CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR AWARDS TO RECOGNIZE CANCER RESEARCHERS

Nominations are being accepted for two cancer research prizes of $200,000 each, funded by the Kirk A. and Dorothy P. Landon Foundation. The awards, a joint initiative of the Landon Foundation, UM/Sylvester, and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) will recognize innovative South Florida cancer scientists in basic science research and translational research, respectively. TAKE NOTE OF NEW LOCATION AND MAILING CODE FOR EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

Effective October 1, the Coral Gables office of the Employee Assistance Program is re-located to the Plumer Building on the Gables campus, second floor, Suite 24. The new locator code for the Gables EAP office is 2429, and all e-mail addresses, phone, and fax numbers remain the same.

BLACKBOARD T-SHIRTS FROM BIOMEDICAL COMMUNICATIONS LET YOU EXPRESS YOURSELF

Biomedical Communications is selling its unique, patented "Erasable Blackboard" t-shirts to benefit the United Way of Miami-Dade. Express yourself as you choose and write a chalk message on your t-shirt, which is machine washable and dryer safe. Shirts are $10 each, and you can pick up your order on October 11 and 12, at the Biomedical Communications service window, Rosenstiel Building, Room 1080. To make an order, look for a display table in front of the Rosenstiel Building on October 11 and 12. ENJOY A DAY OF FANTASY AT DISNEY WORLD AND SUPPORT THE UNITED WAY

The Department of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology is organizing a field trip to Walt Disney World to benefit the United Way. A registration fee of $99 will include transportation and a ticket to the park of your choice: Magic Kingdom, Epcot, MGM Studios, Animal Kingdom, Universal Studios, or Islands of Adventure. The trip is scheduled for November 9, but your reservation and payment must be received by October 31. A bus will depart from Mark Light Stadium on the University's Coral Gables campus at 6 a.m., November 9, so you should arrive by 5:30 a.m. Broward residents should meet at the Holiday Inn on Power Line Road (I-95, exit 32) by 6 a.m. for a 6:30 bus pickup. In this class, participants will obtain an overview of the University's accounting system and will learn to interpret the Report 90s Account Summary, Open Commitment Status Report, and the Report of Transactions. EAP CLASS TEACHES HOW TO HELP A CO-WORKER IN AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP

Are you aware of the issues surrounding domestic violence and how it affects the workplace? At "Domestic Violence: A Workplace Issue," the Employee Assistance Program will teach you why domestic violence occurs, what it means to the work environment, and how to help someone in an abusive relationship. ANNUAL EXTREME ETHICS CONFERENCE TO ADDRESS CHALLENGES IN RESEARCH ETHICS

The Ethics Programs of the University of Miami present "Extreme Ethics: Unusually Difficult Challenges in Epidemiology and Human Subjects Research," October 18 - 20, at the Sheraton Biscayne Bay Hotel in Miami. The conference will feature a one-day workshop on IRB standards, followed by a two-day program to include topics like ethics and bioinformatics, research in genetically isolated communities, and scientists as social advocates, among others. The program will include lectures and interactive roundtable discussions. Continuing education credits will be available for physicians, nurses, and psychologists. JOIN DERMATOLOGY FOR MAKEOVER DEMONSTRATION TO BENEFIT UNITED WAY

Put on a new face at a makeover demonstration sponsored by the Department of Dermatology, along with Bloomingdale's and Yves Saint Laurent. UM/SYLVESTER BREAST CANCER WORKSHOP TO DISCUSS PREVENTION, TREATMENT, AND ADVANCES

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Courtelis Center presents an all-day workshop, "Breast Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment: The Millennium Update," October 23, at Sylvester Conference Room 1301. Topics of discussion will include early diagnosis and prevention, genetic advancements, and psychosocial issues, among others. UM/Jackson employees can attend for $20; the cost is $60 for all others. Six contact hours will be provided for nurses, social workers, and mental health counselors. Preregistration is required, so call Fariba Ostovary at 305-243-4274 to reserve your space.
