FOURTH-YEAR STUDENTS BLAZE A TRAIL TOWARD
EXCELLENCE WITH 2002 MATCH DAY RESULTS

School of Medicine seniors mark another banner year with a complete match to residency training programs across the country. Each of our fourth-year students found a spot in a program of their choice, helping the Class of 2002 achieve a match of 100 percent and beat out the national percentage, which weighed in at 94 percent this year. Congratulations!

TELEPHONE COURTESY STANDARDS
OUTLINED IN CONTINUING UMMG SERIES

The continuing series on Professional Practice and Patient Access Standards of the University of Miami Medical Group (UMMG) moves on to telephone courtesy this week. Greeting: Telephone calls should be answered with a professional tone of voice, using the four-part greeting: 1.) Greeting specific time of day (e.g., "Good morning."); 2.) Department name/description; 3.) Your name; 4.) "How may I help you?" Many telephone calls are handled by the Physician Referral Office (PRO) scheduling and registration staff. For any questions concerning the PRO, contact Johanna Epstein at 305-243-7100. For questions regarding adherence to telephone standards within a department that does not schedule through the PRO, contact the departmental administrator.

WANT TO WRITE WINNING
GRANT APPLICATIONS?

All faculty are invited to apply for admission to the seminar "Write Winning Grants," to be presented April 29 and 30, at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute's Retter Auditorium. The sessions will be conducted by Dr. David Morrison, co-founder and partner of Grant Writers' Seminars and Workshops and also professor of basic medical science and surgery at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Attendance at the seminar is limited. Participants will be selected through an application process, and a fee of $75 for program materials will be applied. UNIVERSITY OFFERS I BONDS
THROUGH PAYROLL DEDUCTION

There are many attractive features of the I Bond and they are now available through payroll deduction. I Bonds are based on a straight forward idea. They are sold at face value and grow with inflation-protected earnings for up to 30 years. I Bonds are U.S. treasury securities and are backed by the full faith and credit of the United States Government. These bonds usually increase in value every month, and interest is compounded semiannually. I Bonds also are liquid and can be turned into cash after just six months. The program of weekly small-group seminars on topics that pertain to the protection of human subjects continues its series on navigating IRB protocol submission this week with "Informed Consent Comprehension," presented by Kenneth Goodman, Ph.D., director of UM's Ethics Programs, March 25, noon to 1 p.m., at the Mailman Center, Room 3023. Learn about the different types of fires and how to prevent them or put them out at "Basic Fire Safety," presented by the Office of Professional Development and Training. UM/SYLVESTER PRESENTS LECTURE
SERIES ON PROVIDING END-OF-LIFE CARE

Physicians, nurses, psychologists, and other health care professionals will learn essential clinical competencies that are required to provide quality end of life care through the EPEC Series 2002: Education on End-of-Life Care, presented by the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. A series of monthly lectures through December will address varied topics in the discipline, beginning March 26 with "Goals of Care," noon, in Sylvester Conference Room 1301. LEARN TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM VIOLENT
CRIME AT WELLNESS SELF-DEFENSE COURSE

Sign up now for the S.A.F.E. National Self-Defense Institute Program and learn the skills to protect yourself from violent crime. The course will be held March 28, noon to 1:30 p.m., and will teach you how to reduce your risk, avoid dangerous situations, and use simple strategies that can help you avoid being attacked. You also will learn life-saving techniques on how to save yourself if you do become a victim. The registration fee is $5 and the deadline for registration is March 26. OB/GYN'S MENOPAUSE SUPPORT SERIES

Register now for the Menopause Support Series, presented by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The series is a two-day interactive seminar geared toward middle-aged women who are beginning to deal with the stresses of menopause and will provide information on physical and emotional aspects of menopause, along with education on the various therapeutic options available. Certified menopause clinicians R. Wayne Whitted, M.D., and Paul Pietro, M.D., along with Vicki Colburn, R.N., all of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, will conduct the program on March 28 and April 11, 6 to 9 p.m. each day, at Jackson South Community Hospital, 9333 SW 152nd Street, Miami. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFERS TRAINING

ETHICS SEMINAR DISCUSSES CLINICAL
RESEARCH AND CONFLICTS OF INTEREST

The Dialogues in Research Ethics series presents its next installment, "Conflict of Interest in Clinical Research," on March 29, noon, at the VA Medical Center, Room 207 (across from the library). Robert Walker, M.D., associate professor of medicine at the University of South Florida, will discuss the researcher's choice between avoiding conflicts of interest or working to manage them with appropriate policies and oversight. He also will review the potential for damage involved with conflict of interest, along with current approaches to reducing its influence on clinical research. Lunch will be provided. SHOW YOUR STAMINA
FOR BREAST CANCER RESEARCH

Challenge yourself and celebrate life April 19 - 21, at the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day walk from Boca Raton to Miami. While walking and camping for three days and two nights, participants will be raising dollars to fund access to care and find a cure for breast cancer, which is the mission of the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade. The park opens and registration begins on April 19 at 8 a.m., followed by an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. Walkers pay a $75 participation fee, while crew members, who eat and camp overnight with the walkers, pay $150. There is no cost to half- and full-day volunteers, whose help primarily is needed at the opening and closing ceremonies. If you want to join the UM/Sylvester team as a walker, or sponsor one of the walkers, call Susan Martin at 305-243-4909. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR GOLF CLASSIC
TO BENEFIT UM PEDIATRIC RESEARCH

The Department of Pediatrics will host the second annual Children's Million-Dollar Celebrity Golf Classic at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa, April 26 - 28. This tournament is geared toward business and professional leaders in the community to generate support for clinical and medical research programs housed in the School of Medicine's Batchelor Children's Research Institute. Hundreds of volunteers are needed for the event's Nike Golf Ball, a fashion show and related auctions, as well as for both days of the tournament. TEAM UM RECRUITS YOU TO JOIN PRESIDENT
SHALALA FOR THE 2002 CORPORATE WALK/RUN

Join Team UM for fitness and fun at the 18th annual Corporate Walk or Run. Mark your calendar and plan to attend this fun event on May 2, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Bayfront Park in downtown Miami. This is a great teambuilding opportunity for you and your co-workers as well as a chance to "rub elbows" with University President Donna E. Shalala. The department with the most participants (family and friends are welcome) will win a pizza party, compliments of Pizza Hut. The cost is $16 if registration is received on or before April 14.
