FORMER UM PATIENT AND PHYSICAL THERAPY GRADUATE TELLS HER STORY IN WOMEN'S MAGAZINE

The September 2000 issue of Marie Clare magazine features a first-person account from Carolina Saenz Bulow, a patient treated at the medical center, who suffered from bone cancer resulting in amputation of her right leg. She was fitted for a prosthesis by Bob Gailey, instructor in the Division of Physical Therapy, and was so inspired by the therapy she received that she pursued a masters degree in the physical therapy program at UM and graduated in 1998. To read the full article, entitled "'I Survived…' Ordinary Women with Extraordinary Courage," pick up a copy of Marie Clare, at newsstands now.

UNITED WAY 2000 IS HERE! HOW ARE YOU CHIPPING IN?

As the number one per capita donor among U.S. private universities, each year the University of Miami is a very active participant in the campaign to raise funds for the United Way. Beyond the statistics, many departments in the School of Medicine do more than their share of giving, holding bake sales, car washes, and much more. The October issue of Medical Center Update, your campus newsletter, will ask "What special contribution does your department make to the University's United Way campaign?" If you've got an answer, reply to update@med.miami.edu. You also can offer your own suggestions. Make your voice heard, and remember, "Good things happen when you give."
