NEUROSCIENCE RESEARCHER DR. MARY BUNGE RECEIVES DISTINGUISHED AWARD
Mary Bartlett Bunge, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy and senior researcher at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, was selected as the first-ever recipient of the Mika Salpeter Women in Neuroscience Lifetime Achievement Award. She was recognized for her exceptional achievements and national and international renown in her field. The award was created to honor neuroscientists conducting innovative research and to promote women in the neurosciences. The award was presented to Dr. Bunge at the Women in Neuroscience 20th Anniversary Celebration and Achievement Awards Ceremony, November 4. CELEBRATE THE GIFT OF LIFE AND DONATE BLOOD
Blood donors will join hands around the Alamo on November 9 as part of a celebratory event sponsored by the South Florida Blood Banks. A party will be held in Alamo Park, featuring live music, and everyone who donates blood will receive a free t-shirt. The blood drive will run November 8 and 9, with donor stations in Rosenstiel's second floor student lounge on the first day, and additional stations in the UM/Sylvester courtyard, Bascom Palmer, and the Mailman Center on November 9.
DR. RICHARD BOOKMAN CHOSEN TO SERVE ON NIH NEUROSCIENCE STUDY SECTION
The National Institutes of Health Center for Scientific Review recently selected Richard Bookman, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology and associate dean for graduate studies, to serve as a member of the Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Neurosciences Study Section. In this position, Dr. Bookman will review grant applications submitted to the NIH, make recommendations on applications, and assess the status of research in his field of science. Members of this study section are chosen based on achievement in their particular discipline, as demonstrated through research achievements, publications, and other scientific honors.
DIRECTOR OF CARDIOLOGY EXPLAINS BENEFITS OF DEFIBRILLATORS IN POLICE CARS
Robert Myerburg, M.D., professor and director of the Division of Cardiology, discussed
the benefits of police cars equipped with defibrillators in a recent Miami
Herald article, "Studies Push Access of Defibrillators." The story focuses
on response time in medical emergencies involving heart attacks and notes that
police officers often arrive on the scene earlier than fire rescue workers. Installing
defibrillators in police cars allows the officer to revive the victim without

BENEFITS ADMINISTRATION TO OFFER MEDICAL COVERAGE FOR OUT-OF-STATE STUDENT DEPENDENTS
Under the University's new health plan with United Healthcare, dependents who are full-time out-of-state college students are covered for emergency benefits while they are away at school. Benefits Administration will introduce a new benefit for 2001. The Student Out of State Plan (SOS) will provide medical benefits for routine or urgent (non-emergency) care to out-of-state college students who are dependents of covered UM employees. The benefits will be provided by a PPO plan called the Beech Street Network. For more information and further details, call Benefits Administration at 305-243-3788.
QUIT SMOKING COLD TURKEY AND GET A HOT TURKEY LUNCH
Do you know someone who needs a little push to quit smoking? Take them to a free lunch in honor of the Great American Smokeout. The Department of Wellness and Recreation is hosting a campus luncheon on November 15. All you need to do is "adopt-a-smoker," and you and your adopted friend can receive a hot turkey lunch with all the trimmings. Free quit kits also will be distributed. FREE ANONYMOUS HIV TESTS FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY
The AIDS Clinical Research Unit (ACRU) is sponsoring free anonymous HIV testing for employees, families, and friends of the University of Miami. You can call the ACRU at 305-243-3838, or visit their office at 1800 NW 10th Avenue, Elliot Building, for more information. The ACRU provides a comprehensive range of HIV services, including screening and clinical drug trials.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFERS COURSE ON SAFETY IN THE LABORATORY
"Laboratory Safety" is geared toward anyone working in an academic or research laboratory and will teach basic biological and chemical safety principals, emergency procedures, and compliance guidelines. ETHICS LECTURE WILL ADDRESS STATE EXPERIMENTS WITH HUMAN SUBJECTS
The Bioethics Program continues its "Dialogues in Research Ethics" lecture series with "Secret State Experiments on Humans," a discussion featuring Jonathan Moreno, Ph.D., professor and director of the University of Virginia's Center for Biomedical Ethics. He will discuss national security research and controversial studies involving atomic, biological, and chemical weapons. The lecture will be held November 7, noon, in the Pathology Services Conference Room, Jackson East Tower, room 2034.
NEW SEASON OF WEIGHT WATCHERS KICKS OFF WITH INFORMATIVE MEETING

EXPERT DISCUSSES NEW DIRECTIONS IN SCREENING FOR BREAST CANCER
The Florida Breast Cancer Coalition, the UM Division of Student Affairs, and the
UM Women's Commission present "New Direction in Breast Cancer Screening ," a luncheon
lecture by Susan Love, M.D., November 9, noon to 1:30 p.m., in the Flamingo Ballroom/University
Center, room 226, Coral Gables campus. Dr. Love, adjunct professor of surgery
at UCLA, has written Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book, and she will report
on recent developments in the fight to eradicate the disease. The event is open
to all UM students, faculty, and staff, and a free lunch will be served, but reservations
