ENHANCED HEALTH PLAN FOR FACULTY AND STAFF AVAILABLE IN JANUARY
Effective January 1, 2001, United Healthcare will replace AvMed as the University's health care plan provider, enhancing existing health benefits. Some of the improvements will include no requirement to select a primary care physician and no need for a referral to see a specialist. Insulin, syringes, and glucometers for diabetes patients will be covered, and members will be able to access medical care throughout the country in areas where United has a provider network. Physicians of the University of Miami Medical Group already are United providers, as are most other AvMed physicians. More enhancements will be detailed in coming months.
MIAMI HERALD ARTICLE FEATURES PICNIC FOR JACKSON PATIENTS WITH HEART MONITORS
Patients who have survived heart ailments, treated at Jackson Memorial Hospital,
gathered at Matheson Hammock Park on Labor Day for a special picnic celebrating
life and supporting each other. This is the third such event organized by the
Division of Cardiology, and about 25 patients attended. Many of those individuals
are fitted with pacemakers or defibrillators, devices that sense abnormal heart
beats and send an electrical charge to prevent a heart attack. Patients also
discussed near-death experiences as a result of their cardiac arrests, finding
comfort in sharing common stories with each other. Raul Mitrani, associate professor
in the Department of Medicine and director of UM/Jackson's Arrhythmia and Pacemaker
Clinic, is quoted in a Miami Herald article
covering the event. To read that article in full, visit http://www.newslibrary.com/deliverffdoc.asp?SMH=145109.
