ANNIVERSARY ALBUM
**********************

Learn fun facts about your second home and its history every two weeks, as e-Update presents the latest in a special series commemorating the School of Medicine’s 50th anniversary.

The first University-owned building at the Jackson Memorial Hospital complex was a five-story structure built for medical education and research. Aptly named the Medical Research Building when it was dedicated in 1960, it is now called the Kathleen and Stanley Glaser Medical Research Building.

Basic science education got its own home in 1969 with the construction of the Rosenstiel Medical Sciences Building, made possible through a $12 million gift from the estate of Louis Rosenstiel. University of Miami President Henry King Stanford announced that, since the gift was the largest received by the University as of that date, both the marine school and the medical building would bear the name of the generous donor.

SPEND A DAY AT THE BEACH TO KICK OFF
UNIVERSITY’S 2002 UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN

Join the University of Miami in lending a hand (and a paintbrush) for a good cause at the 2002 United Way campaign kickoff event. This year’s project will take on Haulover Park on Miami Beach for an “All Over Haulover” on August 15, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help plant palm trees, repair and install picnic benches, paint lifeguard stations, restore the beach’s dunes to prevent erosion, and more. On the day of the event, medical campus volunteers will be picked up from and returned to the Diabetes Research Institute. If you would like to join the University’s team of volunteers, get approval from your supervisor, then contact Allison Gillespie at 305-284-1821 or unitedway@miami.edu. You also can get more information on this project and others in this year’s campaign at http://www.miami.edu/unitedway.

CHANGE YOUR COMMUTE AUGUST 5 – 9 WHEN
MACARTHUR CAUSEWAY CLOSES FOR FILMING

Columbia Pictures is taking over the MacArthur Causeway early next month for filming of high-action scenes for the feature film, “Bad Boys 2.” If you commute to and from the medical center via the MacArthur Causeway, take note that its eastbound lanes will be closed to all traffic from Biscayne Boulevard to Fountain Street (Palm and Hibiscus Islands) August 5 – 9, 5 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Vehicles will be routed to I-195 for a detour, and all tolls on the Venetian Causeway will be lifted during these dates. Police and Highway Patrol officers will be on-site to assist with traffic flow and safety. Alternate weather dates for this highway closing are August 26 – 28.

JOIN IN THE CELEBRATION WITH CUSTOMIZED
50TH ANNIVERSARY STATIONERY FOR YOUR OFFICE

An anniversary logo also is available for any upcoming publications or promotional materials your department is planning to produce. To place an order, contact Deborah Phillips at 305-243-1271.

HIT THE BANK BEFORE YOU HIT THE BOOKS
WITH TAX ADVANTAGE COLLEGE SAVINGS PLAN

Start saving now for future college expenses. The Section 529 College Savings Plan (529 Plan) offers a new way to set aside money for qualified college expenses. Deposits to the plan can be made with after-tax dollars via payroll deduction. This leaves plan savings free to grow without federal income tax, provided they are used at accredited institutions of higher learning for qualified educational expenses, such as college tuition and room and board. Interested? Contact the Office of Benefits Administration to enroll. For more information, visit http://www.miami.edu/UMH/CDA/UMH_Main/1,1770,2340-1;14311-3,00.html.
