LEADERSHIP PRESENTS
IMPORTANT WORKSHOP FOR
FACULTY INTERESTED IN PROMOTION OR TENURE
All faculty and others interested in the Appointment, Promotion and Tenure
(APT) process at the University of Miami School of Medicine are invited to
join Dean John G. Clarkson, Faculty Senate Chair Steven Green, leaders of
the APT Committee, and others for a workshop entitled "Policies and Procedures
for Promotion and Tenure." The workshop will be held Friday, March 22,
4 p.m., in the Mailman Center eighth floor auditorium, and will provide an
opportunity for attendees to learn about faculty promotion and tenure, as
well as the chance to interact with individuals involved in the decision-making
process. This workshop is essential to faculty who will seek promotion and/or
tenure in the next few years and to senior faculty who will vote on these
actions and provide advice to colleagues. The event also will benefit staff
members who have administrative responsibilities related to these matters.
CLINICAL PRACTICE STANDARDS
SERIES CONTINUES
WITH GUIDES ON TEST RESULTS AND REFERRALS
Take note of the following review of turnaround time for patient test results
and guidelines for referrals and authorizations, according to the Professional
Practice and Patient Access Standards outlined by the University of Miami
Medical Group (UMMG). Turnaround of Test Results: Every effort will be made
to report all UMMG ancillary test results within 24 hours of the exam. Pertinent
or significant abnormal findings should be communicated to the ordering UMMG
physician or designee as soon as they are known. The ordering physician should
provide information on how he/she can be contacted. Referral and Authorizations:
Referral and authorization number information must be obtained for patients
covered by a managed care (HMO) organization prior to rendering medical services.
If problems are encountered with obtaining referral or authorization numbers,
contact the department/division administrator. For questions on physician
compliance with these standards, contact Dr. Alan Livingstone at 305-585-1284.
For staff compliance issues, contact Minor Anderson at 305-243-7100.
DR. MARGARET FISCHL
AND COLLEAGUES MARK
15TH ANNIVERSARY OF FIRST AIDS TREATMENT
This week marks the 15th anniversary of the Food and Drug Administration's
(FDA) approval of AZT, the world's first AIDS drug. Margaret Fischl, M.D.,
professor of medicine and director of UM's AIDS Clinical Research Unit, played
a major role in the establishment of AZT as treatment for the disease, which
was perceived as a death sentence before the success of drugs like AZT. Dr.
Fischl was an original investigator of AZT and was the lead author on the
study report that led to its approval by the FDA on March 19, 1987. She also
was a pioneer in the study of protease inhibitors, valuable ingredients in
the "AIDS cocktails" used today, together with AZT. For more information
on AZT's history and UM faculty contributions to HIV/AIDS therapies, visit
http://www.med.miami.edu/medical-pr/news/view.asp?id=56.
CREATE POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS
WITH EASE THROUGH WEB GROUP SERVICE
The Web Development Group, at the request of the Dean's Office, has created
a valuable resource to help faculty compose effective PowerPoint presentations
that follow the School of Medicine's style guidelines and promote the UM brand.
Presentations created through this on-line service will automatically include
the School of Medicine's logo and Web address. A variety of templates make
it easy to customize presentations, and instructions are posted to help make
the process an easy one. To access this service, visit http://webdev.med.miami.edu/forms/powerpoint/.
REVISED CLEARANCE CHECKLIST
FOR
EMPLOYEE TERMINATION AVAILABLE ON-LINE
Human Resources has revised the Clearance Checklist form, which is required
for all employee separations (voluntary and involuntary), including layoffs
and leaves of absence. Correct telephone numbers are now listed on the form,
slight modifications made in wording, and the addition of a clearance required
by the Animal Care and Use Committee for faculty and research employees involved
with related issues. This form can be accessed on-line through the Human Resources
Web site at http://www.miami.edu/human-resources/clearance%20checklist%203-01.dot
and also is available through the Fax Warehouse at 305-284-1087. The form
no longer is available through Apricot Office Supplies. The revisions are
effective immediately, and all earlier versions of the form should be discarded,
as they no longer will be valid. Paychecks for those leaving employment will
be released to the department with regular paychecks once the Clearance Checklist
has been received and processed the by Check Distribution Office. It is the
department's responsibility to ensure that a Clearance Checklist has been
completed correctly and forwarded to Check Distribution. For further policy
details, visit the Human Resources Web site at http://www.miami.edu/UMH/CDA/UMH_Main/1,1770,4074-1,00.html.
