STATEWIDE PBS TELEVISION PROGRAM
FEATURES OB/GYN FACULTY MEMBER
Mary Jo O’Sullivan, M.D., will appear this Thursday, July 31, on WPBT
Channel 2 in South Florida. Dr. O’Sullivan discusses her work with the
Women’s Health Initiative in a segment on hormone replacement therapy
on the program New Florida at 8 p.m. The half hour broadcast will be repeated
Saturday at 6 p.m., Sunday at 5 p.m., and Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in Miami, in
addition to airing on PBS stations across Florida.

in a seminar that focuses on understanding the difference between the two,
on August 15 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the fifth floor conference room of
the McKnight Vision Research Building. We receive feedback and criticism
from multiple sources including co-workers, supervisors, and loved ones. Although
it can be difficult to digest the feedback we get from others,

END-OF-LIFE CARE TRAINING OFFERED
TODAY AT UM/SYLVESTER
Carlos Sandoval, M.D., director of the Courtelis Center for Research and Treatment
in Psychosocial Oncology at UM/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, will
give a lecture on the elements of end-of-life care in the SCCC 1301 conference
room today at noon. The lecture is for health care professionals only and lunch
will be provided. This is the latest in an educational series for physicians
on end-of-life care offered throughout the year at UM/Sylvester. The next lecture
is on grief and bereavement, offered by Victoria Bustamante, Psy.D., and Rev.
Gary Bennett, B.S., on August 19. To register or for more information please

HUMAN SUBJECTS RESEARCH SEMINAR TODAY EXAMINES
USE OF PERSONNEL FROM OTHER INSTITUTIONS
The Human Subjects Research Seminar for July will feature Julia Beutler, human
subjects administrator, who will answer the questions, “When are personnel
from other institutions considered ‘engaged’ (involved) in a research
study and are they covered by UM's assurance?” The lecture will be held
today, July 29, noon to 1 p.m., in the Mailman Center, Room 3023. Lunch will
be served, and advance registration is required. Reserve a seat by sending

OFFER YOUR PREFERENCE FOR RAPE
SELF-DEFENSE COURSE COMING THIS FALL
The Security Department and Wellness Facility are planning a course on self-defense
for women at the School of Medicine this fall and need your feedback. The R.A.D.
(Rape Aggression Defense) Program focuses on awareness, risk reduction, and
practical physical defense techniques. The program costs $35 and consists of
12 hours of instruction that includes risk reduction and awareness strategies,
practical physical defense techniques, supervised simulations of attack scenarios,
and group discussion. Your preference of class time will determine when the
course will be offered. Please choose one of the following offered times and
provide your feedback to lfernand@med.miami.edu:
Tuesdays and Thursdays, four classes over two weeks, 4 to 7 p.m.; Tuesdays
and Thursdays, four classes over two weeks, 5 to 8 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays,
six classes over two weeks, 4 to 6 p.m.; or Saturdays, three classes over three
weeks, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
FINANCIAL ADVISORS VISIT CAMPUS THIS WEEK
FOR INDIVIDUAL CONSULTATIONS
Representatives from Fidelity Investments and TIAA-CREF will visit the medical
campus this week to conduct individual financial counseling sessions. Fidelity
will hold appointments on July 30, and TIAA-CREF will be on hand July 31. All
meetings will be held at the Human Resources Benefits Office, 901 N.W. 17th
