UM AND UF TEAM TOGETHER TO
RESEARCH GENE THERAPY AND DIABETES
The University of Miami
and University of Florida have announced a new collaboration in the fight
to cure diabetes. A $10.4 million grant from the Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundation International will provide funding for a new center called
the JDRF Gene Therapy Center for the Prevention of Diabetes and Its Complications.
Research at
the center will focus on gene therapy's potential to deliver medicine
in novel ways, engineering rejection-proof tissues for islet and kidney
transplant, and tackling complications resulting from diabetes, such as
vision loss. Camillo Ricordi, M.D., professor and scientific director
of the Diabetes Research Institute, has been named co-director of the
center. For more, visit the Miami

MEDICAL PAYROLL DISTRIBUTION TO
OPERATE ON SPECIAL HOLIDAY SCHEDULE
The last payroll distribution for the calendar year for both monthly and bi-weekly employees will be on the afternoon of Thursday, December 28. Payroll checks, as well as TriRail and MetroRail passes, will be available for pick up at the Office of Medical Finance, first floor, Sewell Building. A representative from your department can pick up the checks as usual. If your department does not have someone available to pick up the payroll checks, due to holiday vacation schedules, paychecks will be distributed to employees who receive an actual check. These also may be picked up at the Office of Medical Finance on the afternoon of December 28. If someone will pick up your check in your absence, you must notify Medical Finance in writing before December 28. For all instances, check with your department head to find out which option your office will exercise. Departments may send a representative to pick up direct deposit paystubs on January 2, 2001. In addition, Medical Finance will receive gift deposits to be credited in calendar year 2000 through noon on December 28.
