UNIVERSITY E-MAIL SYSTEMS AND E-UPDATE BACK ON TRACK AFTER "LOVEBUG" VIRUS INFECTION

Last week, the University's infection with the "ILOVEYOU" virus had e-mail services shut down for several days to avoid further effects. Consequently, e-Update was not distributed the week of May 8. Network Services monitored incoming mail and suspended attachments for a brief period, as well. All systems are back to normal service and attachments are allowed. Network Services asks that you delete any suspect messages, as a number of copycat viruses have emerged since the original virus was sent out. Delete suspect messages immediately and do not open their attachments. If you are concerned that your computer may have been infected with the virus, visit http://mns.med.miami.edu/killvirus.exe to run a fix program provided by Network Services. If you have any other concerns or questions, call the Help Desk at 305-243-5999.

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE PHYSICIANS CONTRIBUTE TO HERALD ARTICLE ON ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER

The American Academy of Pediatrics issued guidelines for diagnosing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children this week, according to the May 2 Miami Herald article "Guidelines Aid Diagnosis of Attention Deficit in Kids." Lee Worley, M.D., professor in the Department of Pediatrics, said in the article that ADHD is difficult to diagnose because it is not a concrete condition, in that no medical symptoms are associated with the disorder and the diagnosis is based on the opinions of parents and teachers. Eugene Hershorin, M.D., associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics, stated that he supports the guidelines as a method of preventing an "incorrect diagnosis."
