TEACHING AND LEARNING GRAND ROUNDS
Eugene Provenzo, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Teaching and
Learning at the School of Education, will lead grand rounds on Teaching
and Learning Portfolios in the Health Sciences: Present and Future.
Dr. Provenzo just completed a book on electronic portfolio development
and this interactive presentation will encompass what online and
electronic portfolios are and the possibilities they lend to educators.
The seminar is in the fifth-floor auditorium of the Rosenstiel Medical
Sciences Building this Friday, September 26, from noon to 1 p.m.
Lunch will be provided. For more information call the School of Medicine
Educational Development Office at 305-243-7482.
MICROARRAY COMMITTEE BEING FORMED
Paul Shapshak, Ph.D., a research professor in the Department of Psychiatry
and Behavioral Sciences, and Richard Bookman, Ph.D., associate dean
for graduate studies, are organizing a Gene Expression Microarray
Committee for the purpose of educating researchers about the benefits
of this cutting edge tool and promoting its use by investigators.
Microarray analysis holds tremendous promise for the future of diagnosis
and treatment in most areas in medicine including cancer, genetics,
dementias, heart and lung ailments, transplantation, infectious diseases,
and more. The committee will explore applications for this research
and may also be a good resource for grant applications and publications.
If you are interested please contact Dr. Shapshak at 305-243-3917
or by e-mail at pshapsha@med.miami.edu.

with human subjects. Lunch will be provided and it is not necessary

SPONSORED RESEARCH MANDATORY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM
An item in e-Update three weeks ago suggested that investigators must
attend the existing two-and-a-half day sessions. That is not correct.
Investigators will attend a two-and-a-half hour session later in
the fall covering different aspects of sponsored programs. The program
for investigators will begin in the fall and a notice will be issued
when the program is ready. Currently, we are offering the required
departmental administrator/personnel certification program, which
is divided into five sessions held over a two-and-a-half day period.
These sessions include instruction on proposal processing, sponsor
awards, transactions affecting sponsored accounts as well as governmental
regulations and University policies. Administrators and departmental
personnel need to register by clicking on this link: http://www.miami.edu/development-training.
Select "Online Catalog" at the top of the left column,
then "Alphabetical Course Listing" in the left column,
then choose "Sn" from the alphabetical listing, and view
the course details. To sign up, click on "Register Here!" in
the left column - be sure to choose five sequential dates. For more
information, e-mail Jill Tincher in the Office of Controller at jtincher@med.miami.edu.

SPONSORED ACCOUNTS – SYSTEM CONVERSION
The Information Technology Office is scheduled to begin a conversion
of sponsored account numbers in early October. Currrently, sponsored
account numbers (accounts that begin with the digit 6) contain six
numeric characters. Because we are running out of numbers we must
start using alpha characters in the last position of the sponsored
account number and eventually in the last two positions. For example,
a current sponsored account number may be 661234. Starting in October,
when new sponsored accounts are assigned, the number may be 66123a
or 66123A (the alpha characters will be interchangeable between capital
and lower case letters). The purpose of this notice is to alert departments
that use departmental computer systems, i.e., Grants Manager. Please
take appropriate action to ensure that the alpha character(s) will
be accepted by the system you are running. This conversion will not
affect existing sponsored account numbers. It will affect new sponsored
accounts assigned after October. Questions can be referred to Terry
Diaz in the Controller’s Office at tadiaz@miami.edu or to Bob
Burns in Information Technology at bobb@miami.edu.
GOLF TOURNAMENT TO FIGHT HEART DISEASE
The first ever Jay Bon Salle Memorial Golf Tournament will tee off

fundraiser will play at Crandon Park Golf Course on Key Biscayne
starting at 1 p.m. November 7, followed by cocktails, dinner, awards,
and a silent auction. Golfing spots begin at $125 – dinner
only is available for $50. For more information or to register, e-mail
theJBSfoundation@comcast.net.

Gehrig’s Disease. The ship departs on December 6th with more
than 100 families aboard. Along with stops in the Bahamas, exquisite
