FIDELITY INVESTMENTS AVAILABLE TO ANSWER FINANCIAL QUESTIONS

UNIVERSITY TRAVEL BOOKING SYSTEM IS LIVE
e-Canes Travel, a self-booking reservation tool that provides the most effective
way to plan business travel, is now up and running. e-Canes Travel saves
you time by displaying on a single screen travel agency fares plus fares
from dozens of Web sources, such as Orbitz, Expedia, and AA.com. This new
service also facilitates direct billing to the UM Ghost Card for many fares.

BESMOKEFREE PROGRAM STARTS UP AGAIN IN JULY
Another round of the UM BeSmokeFree program will begin next month. BeSmokeFree
offers faculty, staff and dependents, as well as students and non-university
affiliates, a number of different techniques designed to help kick the
cigarette habit. These options complement the program’s basic support
group/classroom sessions, which will include seven group sessions during
a six-week program. Each session will be led by a variety of health experts,
such as a health educator, respiratory therapist, exercise physiologist,
mental health therapist, and nutritionist. Participants in BeSmokeFree
who also are enrolled in the University’s health care plan will receive
full reimbursement of program fees upon completion of the program. The
cost is $84 for each participant, and all UM health care plan members will
receive a $12 voucher for each classroom session they attend. One-on-one
intake appointments will begin during the first week of July. For more

CONVERSATIONS ABOUT CANCER SERIES
Yili Zhou, M.D., Ph.D., director of Jackson Memorial Hospital Outpatient
Pain Clinic and assistant professor of clinical anesthesiology, neurology,
psychiatry and behavioral sciences, will talk about “New Treatments
for Lower Back Pain” as part of the Conversations about Cancer series
on Monday, July 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. The UM/Sylvester Deerfield Beach facility
is located at 1192 East Newport Center Drive, Suite 100. The presentation

HUMAN SUBJECT RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
The School of Medicine-Miami Heart Research Institute Cardiovascular DNA
Diagnostic Laboratory is recruiting both pediatric and adult individuals
and/or families with any of the following:

Lethal ventricular arrhythmias, especially in the
setting of a first myocardial infarction;

Sudden cardiac death;
-
Drug-induced ventricular arrhythmias or long QT syndrome;
-
Congenital long QT syndrome;
-
Hypertrophic or idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy;
-
Right ventricular dysplasia, or
-
Ventricular non-compaction syndrome.
These samples will be used for research studies of genes

The AIDS Clinical Research Unit, directed by Margaret A. Fischl, M.D.,
professor of medicine, is looking for individuals with HIV-1 infection
who have never received antiretroviral therapy, are on stable antiretroviral
therapy and doing well, and are on antiretroviral therapy and not responding,
for a variety of clinical studies, including the investigation of IL2,
therapeutic HIV-1 vaccines and several new investigational antiretroviral

SURVIVAL SKILLS FOR SCIENTISTS
The Office of Graduate Studies and the Postdoctoral Programs Office will
host a Professional Skills and Ethics Workshop, otherwise known as “Survival
Skills for Scientists,” on July 19 and 20 at the Rosenstiel School
of Marine and Atmospheric Science. The one-credit, two-day workshop for
senior graduate students and postdoctoral fellows will explore how to take
charge of your career, 10 Habits of Highly Effective Scholars, the specifics
of writing a scientific paper, ethical case studies, and more. It will
take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days at the Science and Administration
Building on the Rosenstiel campus. Lunch will be provided. Seating is limited.
