LONG SERVICE AWARDS
More than 330 people on the medical campus have worked for the University
of Miami for at least ten years. All of them will be honored today
in the seventh-floor auditorium of the Lois Pope LIFE Center. Everyone
who will be recognized at the ceremony was notified in advance. Ten-year
employees will be honored at 1 p.m. and employees with 15 to 40 years
of service will be honored beginning at 3 p.m. For more information

MOLECULAR AND CELLULAR PHARMACOLOGY SEMINAR
Sandra K. Lemmon, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Molecular
and Cellular Pharmacology, will speak about “The Role of the
Actin Cytoskeleton and Phosphorylation in Endocytosis” this
Thursday, October 2, at noon in the Pharmacology Conference Room,

GENETICS ETHICS SEMINAR
Mary Kay Pelias, Ph.D., J.D., from Louisiana State University in New
Orleans, will lead a discussion of “Legal and Ethical Issues
in Genetics: An Update,” this Friday at noon in the Microbiology
Conference Room, RMSB 3109. Lunch will be provided and it is not
necessary to RSVP. “Dialogues in Research Ethics” is
a monthly series of discussions on ethics in education. For more

EMPLOYEE HEALTH OFFICE WEB SITE
Visit the updated Employee Health Office site for a variety of important
information for everyone who works on the medical campus. Employees
can access forms for a variety of University programs like the TB
screening form, consent for the Hepatitis B vaccine, and more, learn
about policies and procedures, even make incident reports and register

NEW SITE FOR FAMILY MEDICINE – MORE TO FOLLOW
The Web Development Group has launched a new website for the Department
of Family Medicine and Community Health, at familymedicine.med.miami.edu.
Look for more online projects launching soon, including new sites
for the Department of Neurology, the Cardiovascular Center, and the
Dr. John T. MacDonald Foundation Center for Medical Genetics.
FIRST MEDICAL SCHOOL TRAINERS’ FORUM
If you conduct skills, management, or development training for your
department or other areas of the University of Miami Medical School,
your attendance is required at this one-time forum, Monday, October
13 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Professional Development and Training
office, Dominion Parking Garage, Suite 155. The goal is to identify
trainers, better understand training conducted throughout the medical
school, and determine areas of common interests and needs with the
hope of developing a trainers’ network. If you have questions

MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM FOR MED CAMPUS EMPLOYEES
Are you feeling anxious or depressed? Is your sleep pattern off? Are
you exhibiting self-destructive behaviors? The Department of Psychiatry's
Division of Complementary & Integrative Medicine together with
University of Miami Behavorial Health are sponsoring group sessions
to address individual issues. The group, called Transitions, will
meet every Wednesday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Dominion Tower room 412,
and will be facilitated by Janet Konefal, Ph.D., M.P.H., C.A. Sessions
are free to all University employees. Dr. Konefal will be incorporating
the newest technology of change, Meta-Energetics, which has been

WEIGHT WATCHERS SESSION BEGINS AGAIN
The holidays aren’t far away so members of Weight Watchers on
the medical campus are already planning ahead! The current 13-week
session of this established weight loss program started last week but
anyone interested can still join any time – fees will be pro-rated.
Participants will meet for an hour every Tuesday at noon in ACC West,
room 128. The whole program costs $118 and includes weigh-ins, lessons
in how and what to eat, and plenty of moral support. Participants are
also encouraged to bring a low-calorie lunch to each session. Stop

NEW WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM
Preliminary registration is underway for a 16-week weight loss program
called “FitExpress” which is uniquely designed to help
you achieve your fitness goals. The program will help you structure
your day to help with weight loss, team you up with others who share
your goal, and keep you progressing toward that goal. The entire
16-week program costs $144, but there’s a caveat – entrants
who complete the whole program get half their money back! The program
is expected to begin by the end of October -- to register or for

‘CANES PREPARE FOR PRIME TIME THURSDAY NIGHT
The second-ranked Hurricanes will strive to keep their 24 home-game
winning streak alive on Thursday, October 2, against the University
of West Virginia. The action at the Orange Bowl is scheduled to be
the Thursday night ESPN game of the week, and kickoff is set for

TICKETS ON SALE FOR NEIL GOLDBERG'S CIRQUE
Due to overwhelming interest in the Momentum: The Campaign for the
University of Miami launch celebration, all tickets to the Friday,
October 17, event featuring Neil Goldberg's Cirque have been dispersed.
If you received tickets to the October 17 show that you will not
be using, please return them to the Office of Events Management (locator
code 2410) so your colleagues can enjoy the show. However, Neil Goldberg's
Cirque is staying on the Coral Gables campus for one more night,
Saturday, October 18. This full performance of Cirque will be open
to the public at the Convocation Center. Tickets are on sale now

ULTRASOUND AWARENESS MONTH EVENTS
October is Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month. Luis Izquierdo, M.D.,
director of diagnostic ultrasound, and Barbara Carbajales, supervisor
of ultrasound at the Kendall Medical Center, are offering a tour
of the ultrasound facility for faculty, staff, students, and the
general public on Monday, October 27, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The Kendall

GRIEF WORKSHOP
A day-long seminar called “Monday Mournings” will address
grief in the workplace on Tuesday, October 28. The discussion will
be led by Edie Stark, R.N., a well-known certified grief counselor,
and CME hours are available for nurses, respiratory therapists, and
social workers. Participants will meet in the Jackson Medical Towers,
seventh-floor east, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There is a $50 registration

GOLF TOURNAMENT TO FIGHT HEART DISEASE
The first ever Jay Bon Salle Memorial Golf Tournament will tee off
on Friday, November 7, to benefit the UM Cardiovascular Center. The
tournament is named for Jay Bon Salle, who lost his fight against
congenital heart disease two years ago. Participants in this important
fundraiser will play at Crandon Park Golf Course on Key Biscayne
starting at 1 p.m. November 7, followed by cocktails, dinner, awards,
and a silent auction. Golfing spots begin at $125 – dinner

AN EVENING OF GIVING TO BENEFIT ALS RESEARCH
Please join us for a private evening of shopping at the Dadeland Mall
to benefit the ALS Research Foundation. On the evening of November
23, Dadeland Mall will close its doors to the public and admit only
those with a ticket to participate in the event. Festivities include
a local celebrity fashion show, cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and discounts
at more than 50 stores, including Arden B., GAP, JC Penney, Kenneth
