MEDICAL SCHOOL WELCOMES NEW CHIEF OF CARDIOTHORACIC SURGERY

Tomas Salerno, M.D., was recently named chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He joins the University of Miami from Buffalo, New York, where he served as professor of surgery and chief in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Salerno also fulfills editorial responsibilities on such publications as the Journal of Cardiac Surgery and Cardiovascular Engineering.

UM SURGEON NAMED PRESIDENT OF PRESTIGIOUS SURGEONS SOCIETY

A. Frederick Schild, M.D., professor in the Department of Surgery, was appointed as the sixth president of the American Society of General Surgeons on March 4, at the society's annual meeting. Dr. Schild completed his residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he served as chief resident. An internationally renowned surgeon, Dr. Schild recently visited Japan, South Africa, and Europe to present his work in vascular surgery.

HERALD ARTICLE HIGHLIGHTS SZAPOCZNIK'S FAMILY MODEL

An article in the March 21 edition of The Miami Herald featured the work of Jose Szapocznik, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and director of the Center for Family Studies. Titled "Mission Possible? Expert's Task to Rebuild U.S. Family 'Doable,'" the article outlined Dr. Szapocznik's current studies on the breakdown of the American family as a result of negative neighborhood environments. UM DOCTORS RESPOND TO FIRST LADY'S ANNOUNCEMENT ON CHILDREN AND MOOD DRUGS

Hillary Rodham Clinton recently expressed alarm at research that suggested an increase in the number of children between the ages of 2 and 4 on anti-depressants. In a March 21 Miami Herald article, Jon Shaw, M.D., professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, said parents should bring their child to a specialist before a diagnosis is made. Rebecca Fewell, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Pediatrics and director of the Debbie Institute, stated that medication can be reduced if parents learn the skills to deal with hyperactivity and attention-deficit in children. BENEFITS SUMMARY NOW AVAILABLE TO ALL FULL-TIME EMPLOYEES

The University's Summary Plan Description (SPD), a document explaining employment benefits, is distributed to full-time faculty and staff every five years. The SPD is due for distribution in 2000 and is now available to employees. The SPD describes various benefits such as health and dental insurance, life insurance, flexible spending accounts, and retirement plans, among other employment benefits.
